About Samuel Stowell, Jr.

Samuel was a blacksmith.

The Samuel Stowell whose baptism is recorded at the Bath Abbey Register on 5 Jan. 1581 and detailed further in "Stowell Genealogy", A Record of the Descendants of Samuel Stowell of Hingham, Massachusetts by William Henry Harrison Stowell, (Tuttle Co., Rutland, VT, 1922) is unlikely to be the father of the this immigrant, Samuel Stowell who came to America from Norfolk Co., England. The book details the history of the "Stawell" family in Somersetshire from Norman times, but I've seen no proof of relationship between this Samuel and those of Somersetshire.

Samuel Stowell was a boy of about 10 years of age when he came to America with a large colony of people from Hingham, Norfolk in the company of Rev. Peter Hobart. There is no record of him in Hingham or ship records until his 1649 marriage in Hingham, MA. "Stowell Genealogy" speculates that he may have been brought by relatives of his mother, a family friend or as an orphan apprentice to one of the immigrants.

Later in his life he worked as a blacksmith. His will was probated in Hingham 30 Jan. 1683 and showed that he lived at Ft. Hill St., Hingham.

Henry Gibbs came to New England in 1633 as servant to Edmond Hobart Senior, living with him first at Charlestown and then moving to Hingham in 1635 ["Daniel Cushing's Record" in NEHGR 15:25]. Henry Gibbs died at Hingham 7 or 8 July 1676 [HiVR 1:37; NEHGR 121:198]. In his will, dated 15 June 1676 and proved 31 October 1676, "Henry Gibbs of Hingham ... being sick & weak in body" bequeathed his entire estate personal and real to "Samuell Stowell his children now surviving equally"; "Samuell Stowell Senr." was named executor [SPR 6:141]. Though he was the abutter on the lots of many of his Hingham neighbors, he never appeared as grantor or grantee in the Suffolk deeds. COMMENTS: The wife of Samuel Stowell was Mary Farrow, daughter of John Farrow, who, like EDMUND HOBART, came to Hingham in New England from Hingham in old England [NEHGR 15:25], suggesting a relationship between Henry Gibbs and the Farrow family. Pope includes in his entry for Henry Gibbs the record of admission of Mary Gibbs to Charlestown church on 23 September 1652, but by that date Henry Gibbs had been in Hingham for seventeen years, and there is no indication that he had any family. She was very likely the wife of Matthew Gibbs of Charlestown [Wyman 406].

Samuel was a balcksmith. He not only shod the horses, but repaired all the wagons, farming tools and implements and, what was of great importance, the fire arms with which those pioneers defended their homes and property. His work was humble and undoubtedly crude measured by modern standards, but it covered a wide scope, was essential and apparently was well done for he stood well and was a respected member in that rather dignified and self respecting community, for his descendants all married into the best of families of Hingham and Newton.
