On December 31st 1694, the nobility of the Timon brothers Joannes (Janos), Stephanus (Istvan) and Samuel was announced by Leopold I von Habsburg (holy roman emperor, king of Hungary and Bohemia) and the certificate of nobility was issued by the county of Trencsen (Trencin) on April 14, 1695. However, it seems that this nobility letter was the renewal of a previous one. Indeed, the name of Timon already appears in the nobility census in 1594. The nobility name, which was published in the charter of 1695 was "Schmellchoffi", which became later "Schmerhoffi" or "Schmarhoffi" (Typo error ?). This name was not used by the Timon living in Trencsen county, they rather used the suffix "Szedlicsnai" (referring to the village of Szedlicsna or Szedlitsna) where the family was established. Later, the Timon family, which was established in Eger (Heves County, Hungary), used the name "Schmerrhoffi és Szedlicsnai".
The noble coat of arms is a unicorn rising from a golden crown in a blue shield.
