About Santiago Sauza

Don Santiago Sauza y Delos Rios also known as Papa Tiago (23 April 1777, Tequila, Jalisco, Mexico - 25 December 1880, Intramuros, Manila, The Philippines) was the 22nd gobernadorcillo (1809) and the 8th alcalde or capitan (1828) of Marikina, The Philippines. He was also one of the founders of the first paper mill in the Philippines in 1825. He was sent by King Joseph King of Spain from 1808-1813 from the House of Bonaparte to the Philippines in 1808 to lead the pueblo of Mariquina, Philippines. He was the brother of Don Hilario Sauza, the father of Don Cenobio Sauza, the founder of the world famous Sauza Tequila of the Sauza Tequila Import Company, an award-winning producer of tequila located in Tequila, a municipality of the state of Jalisco, Mexico. It was founded in 1873 when his nephew Don Cenobio Sauza started La Perseverancia distillery.

He married Doña Ysabel Bereguer De Marquina y Sumulong also known as Mama Abe (19 November 1790, Cagsawa, Albay, The Philippines - 30 January 1900, Banwa, Batan (formerly part of Capiz), Aklan, The Philippines) on 19 November 1809 at Parroquia De San Francisco (presently Mapua Institute of Technology), Intramuros, Manila, The Philippines. Doña Ysabel Bereguer De Marquina y Sumulong was the only child of Señor Felix Berenguer De Marquina y FitzGerald, the 55th Governor-General of the Philippines from Alicante, Spain and of Doña Demetria Sumulong y Lindo from Binondo and of Antipolo, The Philippines.

Mama Abe, though she was illegitimate by birth, her mother Metyang who was 18 years old by that time never took the plan to abort her because of illegitimacy instead she was born in the vast green fields of Cagsawa, Albay, Philippines. Mama Abe had unique and interesting ancestries both paternal and maternal. She was the 23rd great granddaughter of Her Royal Highness Nest Ferch Rhys, the Princess of Deuhebarth now Wales and of Gerald de Windsor. Her family line and descendants are recorded and kept by the Berenguer de Marquina-FitzGerald relatives in Bristol, United Kingdom and from Madrid, Spain. Nest first spouse was Gerald de Windsor also known as Gerald Fitzwalter, the progenitor of the FitzGerald and De Barry Dynasties of Ireland and the son of Walter FitzOtho and Gwladys Ferch Ryall. Her second spouse was King Henry I of England. Gerald de Windsor's father was Otho, an honorary baron at the court of King Edward The Confessor and owner of manors in five English counties. Moreover, Mama Abe was a royal blooded lady because of her FitzGerald ancestry, but in her lifetime, she never allowed herself to be treated as a royal, instead as a commoner.

Papa Tiago and Mama Abe had 11 children namely Hilaria Maria Dela Vega Sauza y Berenguer de Marquina, Demetrio Ignacio Felipe Sauza y Berenguer de Marquina, Francisc Antonio Salvador Sauza y Berenguer de Marquina, Restituta Maria del Carmen Sauza y Berenguer de Marquina, Lorenzo Eduardo Teofilo Sauza y Berenguer de Marquina, Xystus Amadeo Celestino Sauza y Berenguer de Marquina, Miguel Juan Santiago Sauza y Berenguer de Marquina, Jose Alberto Filemon Sauza y Berenguer de Marquina, Brigida Maria del Cielo Sauza y Berenguer de Marquina, Refugio Maria del Rosario Sauza y Berenguer de Marquina and Anselmo Benedicto Onofre Sauza y Berenguer de Marquina.
