- 111194 Response. As usual I enjoyed the latest issue of the SELF FAMILY NEWSLETTER. On page 103 is a query regarding the Selfs of Prince Edward County. I do not know what the evidence may be that the William Isaac Self she mentions was born in 1775 in Prince Edward County nor do I know what proves he was the same "William Self" whose marriage to Dicey Vaughn is recorded in Bedford County in 1796, but I have long wondered who this William was who married Dicey Vaughn. However, if she does have evidence that the William who married Dicey Vaughn was indeed born in Prince Edward County in 1775, then he was surely connected to the William Self mentioned in a scant few records of Prince Edward County around 1779. However, I would suggest that he was definitely not William Jr., son of this older William Self. This older William Self seems almost surely to be the same William Self who had on-going ties with Cumberland County from at least 1768 to his death in 1791 in Cumberland County. This seems to be proven by the fact that the William Self "of Prince Edward County" who bought land in Bedford County in 1779 was joined by his wife Hannah when he later sold that land (by then part of Campbell County) in 1786. And Hannah was the name of William Self's widow in 1791 in Cumberland County. This William Self's son William was definitely his eldest son and perhaps his eldest child.
I had long projected a birth of circa 1755 for him based on the few known dates for other children of William Sr. However, the recent discovery of the Cumberland County Tax List of 1768 seems to shed light here for it shows TWO tithables named William Self. A tithable at that time only had to be 16 or over. The two tithables named William Self head separate households. One household only has one tithable; the other has five tithables. I would suggest that the first one is that of William Self Jr. apparently born before 1752; the other that of William Self Sr. I know of no other logical explanation for these two Williams Selfs in Cumberland County in 1768.
There has always been some confusion in my mind as to why there are numerous records of the name William Self in Bedford and Campbell County at the same time the name William Self appears fairly consistently in Cumberland County. Though I think most of them are clearly to the same William Self who obviously was connected with both counties, it is also possible that some of the references are to William Junior?
So if she does have evidence her ancestor William Isaac Self was born in 1775 in Prince Edward County then I would suggest that he may well have been a son of William Self Jr who was a tithable by at least 1768. William Senior seems to have had only one other son, Thomas, who was his youngest child not being born until 1776. Just one thought in closing. Hannah was the wife of William Self Sr. by at least the mid 1770's and surely the mother of the younger children, but I seriously doubt that she was the mother of the older children since William Self's children seem to have birth dates ranging from before 1752 to as late as 1775. My own ancestor, Francis Ann, who seems to have been the 5th child was born in January 1763. Susannah and Thomas seem to have been born much later than the other children of William Sr. I mention this because in looking for the origins of William Self Sr. we should not expect to find him with a wife named Hannah. Also, our current knowledge that he was a married adult fathering children by 1750 or so suggests he was born earlier than we originally realized. This information limits somewhat the search for eligible fathers among the Selfs of Westmoreland and Northumberland County if that is indeed where he originated?
I should mention one other matter. I have long believed that the above William Self Jr. migrated to Lincoln Co., N.C. by the 1790's where he is found quite near his brother-in-law, Benjamin Homesley. However, it would not be surprising that he might have had a son who either remained behind in Bedford Co., Va. or perhaps returned there to marry?
