About Sarah Davis

Biography

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/35624671/sarah-davis

Sarah is the daughter of Archibald and Elizabeth (Beggs) Ruddell.

Sarah married Thomas Davis February 21, 1791 in Shenandoah County, Virginia. Known children born to them are:

  1. George (February 28, 1794 Virginia),
  2. James (January 25, 1798),
  3. Elizabeth (1802 Bourbon County, Kentucky),
  4. Pauline (1805 Bourbon County, Kentucky),
  5. Henrietta (1808 Bourbon County, Kentucky),
  6. Sarah T. (June 10, 1810 Bourbon County, Kentucky), and
  7. William (January 28, 1814 Bourbon County, Kentucky).

According to "The Davis Family of Kentucky" Sarah Ruddell and Thomas Davis were captured at Ruddell's Station, Virginia (now Kentucky) by the British and Native Indians in 1780. They were later released back to their families. "Sarah knew the Shawnee language as well as her own and spent much time talking to the Indians she had known when a captive.."

By 1802 Thomas and Sarah had moved to Kentucky and by 1828 Pike's County, Missouri.

Notes

From "Along the Licking", by Tatum Este'l:

Little Sarah Ruddle, only twelve, niece of Isaac Ruddle, had come to visit her brother James. While there, she was often seen with a boy her age, Thomas Davis, whose family came in near the same time as the Goodnights, Conways and Longs. (Note: time frame appears to be abt. 1780).

Disputed Parentage

This Sarah Ruddle has sometimes been placed as a daughter of Isaac Ruddle, but Isaac did not name a daughter Sarah in his will (Note: Isaac Ruddell's will is very detailed and appears to name all of his children). Other researchers place her as a daughter of Archibald Ruddle, who did have a daughter, Mary (named in his will) and other un-named daughters, as follows (excerpt from Archibald's will):

unto my daughters ...Mary excepted......"
