Sarah was the daughter of Jacob Stover of Switzerland and Sarah Boone from England. In some documents the family name is seen as Stuber, Stober and Stowber.

Her father had land grants in Pennsylvania and Virginia. He sold the PA land and other German and Swiss families settled on his land in Virginia.

Her mother was the aunt of Daniel Boone, making Sarah his cousin.

Sarah married Rowland Ellis on 27 Mar 1744 in the Exeter Friends Meeting Hall in Berks Co., PA. After her marriage she followed the Quaker customs; her parents were not Quakers.
