  • '158. SERGEANT SAMUEL FIELD (Zechariah, John. John, Richard, William, William), b. about 1651, Hartford, Conn. ;m., Aug. 9, 1676, Sarah Gilbert daughter of Thomas and Catherine (Chapin), of Springfield. She m., 2d, Oct 17, 1702, Ebenezer Chapin, of Springfield. Sarah, daughter of Thomas and Catharine (Bliss) Gilbert, of Springfield, b. Dec. 19, 1655; d. Feb. 4, 1712. Samuel Field, son ot Zechariah and Mary, b. in Hartford, Conn., about 1651. He came with his father to Northampton in 1663. He removed to Hatfield where he was slain by Indians in ambush while hoeing corn in Hatfield meadows, June 24, 1697. He was a sergeant in the Turners Falls fight. May 19, 1676. He was a prominent and influential man in Hatfield, holding many town offices. The following settlement of his estate was copied from the original probate records of Hampshire county by Hon. George Sheldon, of Deerfield. "We whose names are underwritten appointed to distribute the estate of Sergt. Samuel Field to ye widow and children according to settlemen w'ch as followeth July 24 1701. To ye widow out of the movables at £7 — To Sarah, her portion out of the movables £12 10s. To Mary Field of movables, £5 13s. To be paid out of the lands in good pay or money £6 17s, £12 10s. which Saml Field is to pay. To Samuel Field the eldest son and heir, ye whole of the house lot and Lands at ye farm or elsewhere at he agreeing with his mother for her 3rd for her life yrly at such rent as they can agree, as also for all the Lands in her disposal till ye young children come to be of age he paying in money or setting out part of the land to his brothers according to its appraisal in the inventory at £97 (viz.) to Thomas Field at present £8 6s. 8d. and after his mothers death £4 3s. 4d. — £,12 10s. To Zechr Field at present or wh of age £8 6s. 8d. and after his mothers death £4 3s. 4d. — £12 10s. To Ebenezer Field at present or wh of age £8 6s. 8d., and after his mothers death £4, 3s. 4d. — £12 10s. The allowed distribution is something varying from the settlent yet ye land lying in several parcells any other division there being 5 sons will wholle incapacitate ye improvement of it to any advantage and therefore that this division may be accepted by the Judge of Probate and confirmed to wch we subscribe this 24 July 1701.   • '(II) Sergeant Samuel, son of Zachariah Field, was born in Hartford, Connecticut, about 1651. He removed to Hatfield, where he was slain by Indians in ambush while at work in his field, June 24, 1697. He was a sergeant in the Turner's Falls fight with the Indians, and an influential citizen and town official of Hatfield. He married Sarah Gilbert, who bore him eight children.
    • (III) Captain Zachariah (2), son of Sergeant Samuel Field, was born in Hatfield, Massachusetts. He removed to Deerfield in 1710, an in 1717 to Northfield, Massachusetts, where he died. He was captain of militia, selectman many years, and a very wealthy and influential man. He married Sarah Mattoon, who prior to her marriage was carried away captive by the Indians and held a prisoner in Canada for five years. She bore him ten children.

  • Catharine - bap. 1626, Berry Pomeroy, England. Catharine was first married on Nov. 20, 1646 to Nathaniel BLISS (bur. Nov. 11, 1654, Springfield, Hampden Co., MA), son of Thomas BLISS and Margaret LAWRENCE. The sister (or half-sister) of Nathaniel BLISS was Mary (BLISS) PARSONS, who was tried and acquitted for witchcraft in Springfield in 1651. Catharine was married second on Jun. 30 or Jul. 1, 1655 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT to Thomas GILBERT (bap. Feb. 16, 1611/2, Yardley, Worcester, England; d. Jun. 5, 1662, Springfield, Hampden Co., MA), son of Thomas GILBERT and Elizabeth BENNETT. Catherine was the third wife of Thomas GILBERT, who was first married Sep. 17, 1639 in All Saints, Bromwich, Staffordshire, England to Mary JAMES (bap. Dec. 12, 1641, Yardley, Worcester, England), and second married Lydia. Lydia GILBERT was executed for witchcraft at Springfield, MA shortly after Nov. 28, 1654. Catherine married third Samuel MARSHFIELD. Children of Catherine and Nathaniel BLISS: Samuel married Sarah STEBBINS; Margaret married Nathaniel FOOTE (son of Nathaniel FOOTE and Elizabeth SMITH); Mary married Nathaniel HOLCOMB (son of Thomas HOLCOMB and Elizabeth); and Nathaniel married Deborah COLTON (daughter of George COLTON and Deborah GARDNER). Children of Catherine and Thomas GILBERT: 'Sarah married first Samuel FIELD, and second her first cousin Ebenezer CHAPIN'; John married first Hannah BLAKEMAN, and second Hannah CANFIELD; Thomas married first Anna BANCROFT, and second Abilene MARSHFIELD (daughter of Samuel MARSHFIELD and Hester WRIGHT); and Henry married Elizabeth BELDING.
