Sarah (SHATTUCK) Gardener was feisty!
Per "History of Nantucket" by Alexander Starbuck: She (Sarah Starbuck) had made herself obnoxious to the Massachusetts government by sympathizing with the Quakers, had been brought before the Salem Court for absenting herself "from the publik ordinances on the Lord's day, for neglecting to attend services at the First Church in Salem and for attending assemblies of the Friends, and had been excommunicated from the First Church in Salem for so doing. The widow Sarah was a woman of decided opinions and not inclined to mask them. Sarah, daughter of Richard and Sarah, married Eleazer Folger, son of Peter and when Peter was imprisoned during the "Insurrection," the Gardner family showed indignation and were arrested. They failed to appear at the Court held April 22, 1677 to which they were summoned but did appear at the Court next following with this result: 'Sarah, wife of Mr. Richard Gardner, being legally convicted of speaking very opprobriously and uttering many slanderous words concerning the imprisonment of Peter Folger who was imprisoned by order of the court, upon her good demeaning herself, and civilly being to the good satisfaction and likeness of the court, the Court think fit to remit all other fines provided by law in such case, but she shall be reproved and admonished to have care for the future of evil words tending to defaming His Majesty's Court.'"

... Kathy Cole says, yeah, whatever, take that you court of Salem! Go Sarah!

The oldest son of Richard was born of a former wife. (Unknown) She possibly died during child birth as Richard remarried 2 years later.

Biography

Sarah Shattuck was probably born about 1632 in Salem to Damaris and Samuel Shattuck.<ref>Vital Records: Volume II, page 464 "SHATTUCK, Sarah, w. Richard Gardner "1st of Nantucket," sister of Samuel, 1632, PR.38."</ref>
Richard Gardner married Sarah Shattuck, daughter of widow Damaris Shattuck who married Thomas Gardner Sen'r as his second wife. Since their eldest son, Joseph, was married in 1670, it is estimated that Richard and Sarah must have been married prior to 1652 in Salem.<ref>Gardner, Frank Augustine. Thomas Gardner, Planter (Cape Ann, 1623-1626; Salem, 1626-1674) and Some of Descendants: Salem, Massachusetts, Essex Institute, 1907; page 47</ref> For information regarding their children, see page 49, page 50, page 51 and page 52. Like nearly all of her Shattuck relations, Sarah was attached to the Society of Friends and suffered much in consequence. In the County Court Records at Salem, Case 57, "5th mo., 1658" "The wife of Richard Gardner was convicted of her frequent being absent from the public ordinances on the Lord's Day, fees of court, 30 shillings." She was brought before the court several times in the next few years, either for neglecting to attend the services at the First Church in Salem or for being present at a "Quaker Meeting."<ref>Gardner, Frank Augustine. Thomas Gardner, Planter (Cape Ann, 1623-1626; Salem, 1626-1674) and Some of Descendants: Salem, Massachusetts, Essex Institute, 1907; page 47</ref> In 1662, she was excommunicated from the First Church in Salem for attending the assemblies of the Friends.<ref>Gardner, Frank Augustine. Thomas Gardner, Planter (Cape Ann, 1623-1626; Salem, 1626-1674) and Someof Descendants: Salem, Massachusetts, Essex Institute, 1907; page 47</ref> In 1667, the Court Records of Salem state, "this court in consideration that the wife of Richard Gardner is removed out of this jurisdiction to dwell, whoe was formerly fined 40 shillings, upon request of Mr. Samuel Gardner that ye court would remit the said fine: this court doe remit 20 shillings of the said find and the said Samuell doe promise to pay the other 20 shillings."<ref>Gardner, Frank Augustine. Thomas Gardner, Planter(Cape Ann, 1623-1626; Salem, 1626-1674) and Some of Descendants: Salem, Massachusetts, Essex Institute, 1907; page 48</ref> Sarah Gardner was evidently a woman with a strong character and one who was not afraid to act and speak her convictions. We see evidence of this independence even after her removal to Nantucket. "For speaking very opprobriously concerning the imprisonment of Peeter Foulgier," shewas arrested but pardoned on being intimidated into repentance."<ref>Gardner, Frank Augustine. Thomas Gardner, Planter (Cape Ann, 1623-1626; Salem, 1626-1674) and Some of Descendants: Salem, Massachusetts, Essex Institute, 1907; page 48</ref> Thomas Story, the Friend, on landing at Nantucket in 1708, went to theresidence of Sarah Gardner.<ref>Gardner, Frank Augustine. Thomas Gardner, Planter (Cape Ann, 1623-1626; Salem, 1626-1674) and Some of Descendants: Salem, Massachusetts, Essex Institute, 1907; page 48</ref> Sarah's husband, Richard Gardner, died "1st mo. 23rd, 1688" (Mar. 23, 1688). Concerning the settlement of his estate, it was stated in the records, "Letters of administration on the estate of Mr. Richard Gardner Senior deceased are granted unto Sarah Gardner, Relict of sd. Gardner, who bindeth herself to peform the trust of an administratrix and tobarre the court harmless according to law."<ref>Gardner, Frank Augustine. Thomas Gardner, Planter (Cape Ann, 1623-1626; Salem, 1626-1674) and Some of Descendants: Salem, Massachusetts, Essex Institute, 1907; page 49</ref> Sarah died in 1724 in her 93rd year.<ref>Gardner, Frank Augustine.
