Sarah Hart, Farmington, CT. 3rd daughter of Deacon John Hart of Farmington and Kensington, and his wife Esther Gridley, Born June 19, 1719, at Farmington, md. 19 June 1740, Stephen Root, son of Timothy and his wife Margaret Seymore, born march 18, 1711. d. 5 Sept 1752, age 41. She married 2nd ,11 Apr 1758, Eldad Lewis who died at Southington, 23 June 1784, age 73 yrs. He was son of Isaac Lewis of Farmington and his first wife Abigail Curtiss, of Wethersfield, Htfd. CT. Sarah died at Wallingford, CT. 25 Jan 1789, age 69 yrs, 7 mo, 6 days. She reared five of Eldad's other wives children and five of her own. Her Will mentions: James Root, Eldad Lewis, Hart Lewis, Sarah Sloper Ruth Newell, Jerusha Crittenden, Sarah Hull, married Lieutt. Chas Hull.

Family Patriarch, Stephen Hart, Cambridge, 1632; freeman, Mass., May 14, 1634; an original proprietor at Hartford, his home-lot in 1639 was on the west side of the road to the Neck, now Front St., near where Morgan St. crosses it. He removed to Farmington ; one of the original members of Farmington church, Oct. 13, 1652, and Deacon ; deputy from Farmington, May, 1647 to 1655, and again in 1660 ; one of the eighty-four proprietors of Farmington in 1672 ; m. (1) name unknown; (2) Margaret, widow of Joseph Nash, and before him, of Arthur Smith ; d. March, 1682-3, aged 77 ; will dated March 16; inv. March 31, £340. 4. His widow survived him, and d. March 1, 1693-4.[9]

This/ Monument/ Is erected to the memory/ of/ Capt. Eldad Lewis, Esqr./ Who/ In publick employment was faithful,/ In domestick life/ He was a tender husband, kind father & sincere friend./ That/ He was very charitable to the poor-/ They will testify/ And that -/ He was uncommonly humane & hospitable/ Let a numerous acquaintance declare/ In every circumstance of life/ His character was unsullied/ His first devotion was to religion/ His next/ To his fellow men/ He was born Feby. AD 1711 & died June 22d/ AD 1784/ Beneath this Tomb what solemn silence reigns/ Yet let it speak/ BE YOU ALSO READY!/ And beneath the right side of this monumental stone/ Lies also interred the mortal remains of/ Mrs. Sarah Lewis/ Who spent the short period of her life/ In the unvarying practice of piety towards God,/ And benevolence to mankind,/ during her life she was the affectionate [wife]/ of two successive husbands, the first was Mr. Stephen Root,/ And the other was Eldad Lewis, Esqr./ She was the kind yet exemplary mother of ten children/ She was born in August 1719 and died January 25th 1789/ Man in his best state is VANITY.
