About Sarah Hoadley

11. x. Sarah, bapt. 20 Nov. 1625, d. Halstead, co. Kent, Eng. 1 Nov. 1693,

m. Guilford, 14 July 1642, Rev. John Hoadley, b. Eng. Jan. 1616, d. Rolvenden, co. Kent, Eng. 28 June 1668.

Both came to America in the ship St. John, in 1639, and he was one of the signers of the Guilford Covenant, and one of the first "Pillars" of the first ch. at Guilford (R-6). In 1653 he ret. to Eng. where his wife and ch. followed in 1655, and was appointed Court Chaplain to Oliver Cromwell's garrison at Edinburgh Castle. They had 7 children while at Guilford, and 3 more at Edinburgh Castle. In 1662 he rem. to Rolvenden where 2 more ch. were b. making 12 in all, but their posterity in the male lines became extinct in 1776 by the death of John Hoadley, LL.D. Chancellor of the Diocese of Winchester.

11. i. Samuel Hoadley, b. 30 Sept. 1643; went to Edinburgh and in 1659 attended King James Coll. He was the father of Benjamin Hoadley (1676-1761), who was successively Bishop of Bangor, Hereford, Salisbury, and Winchester, and the first native of Connecticut who wrote and published a book. He had a brother John (1678-1746), who was successively Bishop of Leighlen, and Ferns; Arch-Bishop of Dublin and of Armagh.

11. iv. Athia Hoadley, b. 7 June 1648, d. Rolvenden, 27 Mar. 1664, where the name is rec'd as Alicia,
