Mrs. Sarah L. Holman 97, oldest resident of Madison County died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. L.Y. Rigby,(Jane) of Rexburg. Thursday noon following an illness of several weeks duration.
Mrs. Holman fell recently and suffered a fractured leg. She was born in England May 1 1844 the daughter of James and Amy Britnell Loader. '''She came to America in 1856 and crossed the plains with the Martin Hand Cart Company. She was the last surviving member of that company.''' The family consisted of the parents, six girls and one boy.
Enroute across the plains Mr. Loader died and was buried at Ash Hollow, Neb. The girls and their mother, pulling the handcart, finished the trip and arrived in Salt Lake City on November 30, 1856. Only 40 per cent of the company survied the strenuous trip.
The family moved to Pleasant Grove, Utah then to Santaquin, Utah coming to Rexburg in 1885.
Mrs. Holman was married to George H.A. Harris who preceded her in death, and in 1875 she married John G. Holman. Mr. Holman died in 1888.
She was an active LDS worker, serving as Relief Society President when the Rexburg Stake covered the Upper Snake River Valley territory.
Survivors include seven sons and daughters. Mrs. Sarah E. Ricks, Rexburg, B.R. Harris, Salt Lake City, D. Rolla Harris, Sugar City, Mrs. Zelphia Bramwell, Salt Lake City, Mrs. Jane Rigby, Rexburg, A.L. Holman and E. Holman both of Sugar City.
Sixty-nine grandchildren, 139 great-grandchildren, and 9 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Rexburg Stake Tabernacle with Winslow R. Smith of Salt Lake City, former President of the Eastern States Mission and a Grandson of George A. Smith former LDS Apostle, officiating.
Interment will be in the Rexburg Cemetery under the direction of the Flamm Funeral Service.
