About Sarah McClure Humphrey
Sarah McClure Morrow preferred to be called “Sal” or “Sally.” Her daughter-in-law Alice said that she thought Sally was born in Ballymena, Ireland (near where the Timothy Eaton family came from) and came to Canada as a young girl. Her father was hired by Eaton’s to work in the Toronto store. He may have had a store of his own (draperies?). Her obituary states that she was born in Toronto and trained there as a Nurse at Toronto General Hospital, graduating with high honors as an R.N. A strong Presbyterian, she organized the women's auxiliary which was responsible for founding Sudbury Memorial Hospital. (According to her daughter-in-law Alice, Mrs. Humphrey was troubled that the Roman Catholics had a hospital and the Protestants did not!) Her picture hangs in the hospital’s foyer. She died at 75 in the mid-1950’s, which puts her birth date around 1880. Her grandson Chris Humphrey remembers her carrying him while he clung to his tricycle, during the time his mother was in hospital having his brother Brian.
