About Sarah Inskeep

Note about parents:

Sarah Ward was reportedly born in Philadelphia in 1703 (see below). Her parents have been hypothesized to be William Ward and Grace Ward, nee unknown. William Ward died in Upton, Burlington County, New Jersey, and reportedly Grace remarried on September 1, 1702, in Queens, New York.

It is, of course, possible that Sarah's father died months before she was born. What is a little more confusing are the locations where this supposedly all happens. Grace Roe needs to be in Philadelphia in 1703 for the birth, and she also needs to marry second husband John Roe in Queens, New York on 01 Sep 1702. Furthermore, Grace is supposedly born a Hedger, born in Evesham, New Jersey, but her parent is assumed to be Thomas Hedger of Queens, New York, who apparently never lived in southern New Jersey.

Grace simply cannot be in so many places at once. For one thing, if Grace is a Hedger, born in Evesham, she's likely not the daughter of Thomas Hedger. I've therefore disconnected Grace from her supposed Queens parents.

Grace may work as Sarah's parent, but only if we come up with a reasonable timeline. This will require more legwork to settle. We don't know when William Ward died, so there's some flexibility there. Perhaps the timeline looks something like this:

  • August 21, 1702: WIlliam Ward dies in Upton, NJ
  • Sept 1, 1702: Widow Grace travels to New York and marries John Roe, with the idea of both returning to New Jersey after the wedding
  • Mar-Apr of 1703: Sarah Ward is born in Philadelphia

The problems are clear: (1) Sarah would likely have been given the last name of "Roe", not "Ward", in this scenario; (2) It's hard to bring Philadelphia into the picture, because presumably mother Grace would have returned to Upton instead; (3) The courtship between mother Grace and John Roe would have to be the most efficient on record, since Grace would have had to leave Upton for New York on almost the very day her husband passed away.
