About Sarah John Jones, Convict "Lady Juliana" 1790
Sarah John JONES (alias Sarah JONES) was transported for stealing a silver watch (value 30s), a steel chain (value 2s), three stone seals (value 2s) and a steel watch key (value 1d) from a Mr William Appleby. She was tried at the Old Bailey on the 23rd January 1788, found guilty and sentenced for 7 years and to be transported to Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania). At the time of her conviction Sarah was married to a John JONES, but no further details can be found about John and what happened to him after Sarah's transportation.
Sarah was transported on the ship “Lady Juliana”, under the name Sarah JONES, which left the port of Portsmouth on the 29th July 1789 and arrived at Port Jackson, Sydney, Australia on the 3rd June 1790. The “Lady Juliana” is recognised as the first ship to bring all female women to the Colony.
On the 1st August 1790, Sarah was transported to Norfolk Island on the ship “Surprize” to serve her 7 year sentence. During this time she met and lived with Thomas NEWBY and moved to Tasmania with him in 1808.
On the 23rd December 1814, Sarah passed away in Hobart, Tasmania, aged 67 years and was buried 2 days later (26th December 1814).
