Sarah Emerson Luther was the daughter of Dr. Oliver Perry Luther and Sarah Jane Emerson and was born in Florida. She raised her orphaned niece and nephews of her brother John Dowd Luther of Florida. She was a well-respected teacher in Alabama and in 1921 was in charge of a division in the new state board of education of Alabama, and in 1922 was the Supervisor of Exceptional Education in Montgomery, Alabama. Her gravestone inscription reads: "Her home has lost her sheltering arms, Her church an active Christian worker, Her state one of the most forceful educational leaders. Those who knew her best loved her most."
