About Sarah James
Notes on Sarah E. Mason
It has been suggested that Sarah's maiden name was "Mason". She may have been a daughter of George Mason I and Mary French?. The record shows that George Mason I and Mary French? had one son, George. There may have been other children, "but positive proof is lacking." (See "The Five George Masons" by Pamela C. Copeland and Richard K. MacMaster, 1975, at p. 17). George and Mary were married in Virginia after 1652, but before 1658.
According to the same source, "In 1701 he (George Mason II) conveyed an additional 200 acres of the tract (land he had inherited from his father) as a gift to Thomas and Mary Barbee. He sold the remaining 800 acres in 1705 to Edward Mountjoy." (See ibid. at p. 39). This land was in the Aquia area. The land given to Thomas and Mary Barbee is noted in Mercer Land Book, fols. 103-4 and N.N., bk. 2, fol. 33. "This was a deed of gift to Thomas and Mary Barbee, son and daughter of Andrew Barbee, deceased." (See ibid. at p. 290.) {n.b.: First page in Sources tab}
More research needs to be done concerning the parentage of Sarah. Until proof is forthcoming her parentage is listed as "possible"; and relationships to the recorded family are "unproven".
It is not certain that this Sarah is a daughter of George Mason I.
Children:
Thomas Barbee, born 1690, Stafford Co, Virginia
Mary Barbee, born 1692
After Andrew Barbee died, Sarah married Thomas James, of Potomac Creek in Stafford Co. VA, abt 1699.
Thomas James (Husband) b. 1674 in Overwharton Parrish, Stafford County, Virginia
Marriage: 11 SEP 1699 in Overwharton Parrish, Stafford County, Virginia
Children:
George James b. 1702 in Stafford County, Virginia
John James b. 16 Mar 1707/08 in Stafford County, Virginia
Joseph James b. 12 Oct 1712 in Stafford County, Virginia
Thurston James b. 1715 in Stafford County, Virginia
There is some circumstantial evidence which seems to indicate that she might actually have been a daughter of Col. George MASON I (Col. George MASON II, the only documented child of Col. George MASON I -- and that is only through deed records, no will for the first George Mason has ever been found -- gave several hundred acres to the two children of Andrew and Sarah E. Barbee). Unfortunately, as far as I know, there is no way to document this relationship one way or the other. By her first husband, Andrew BARBEE, Sarah E. was the mother of two children -- a son, Thomas BARBEE, and a daughter (about whom nothing else is known, as far as I know). By her second husband, Thomas JAMES, she had at least three sons -- George JAMES, John JAMES, and I believe Joseph JAMES.
The deed is circumstantial evidence. But it is good circumstantial evidence. Perhaps someday we will discover some corroboration. Others more able than I have tried, but hope remains.
Some sites claim she is the daughter of George Mason's first wife Mary French, but this is not true since Mary French died before Sarah was born.
Daughter of George Mason & Frances (MNU) Norgrave.
Born in Stafford County, VA in 1672 and died in Stafford County, VA in 1715.
Married Thomas "Potomac Creek" James on 9/11/1699 at Overwharton Parish, Stafford County, VA.
