Sarah is the 10th Great Grandmother of George W. Bush.

Sarah Odding (daughter of William Odding and Margaret Odding)2378, 2379 was born Bef. 21 Oct 1612 in Madron, Cornwall, Eng.2380, and died 01 Mar 1686/87 in Kingston, Washington Co., RI. She married Phillip Sherman on Mar 1633/34 in Roxbury, Suffolk Co., Mass.2381, son of Samuel Sherman and Philippa Ward.

Includes Notes for Sarah Odding:

Sarah Odding was born in England, date and place unknown. She came to America with her mother and step-father, John Porter, in Winthrop's fleet in 1630. She is listed in Reb. John Eliot's Record of Church Members of the First Church in Roxbury in which he states: "Sarah Odding. she was daughter in law (step-daughter) to John Porter & came with her parents and was after married to Philip Sharman of this Church."

THE GREAT MIGRATION BEGINS

SARAH ODDING

In the list of admissions to Roxbury church, member #95 was "Sarah Odding. She was daughter-in-law to John Porter & came with her parents & was after married to Philip Sharman of this church" [ RChR 79].
COMMENTS: This admission was late in 1633, but her parents were much earlier in the list, and the family probably came to New England on one of the ships that arrived during the early summer. See JOHN PORTER and PHILIP SHERMAN. In 1998 Patricia Law Hatcher discovered that Sarah Odding was born by 1612, daughter of "William Oddyn" of Braintree, Essex [ TAG 73:176-80

Disputed Parents ==Researchers of the Oddings family in England have given convincing proof that George Odding and his wife Margaret Lang were not the parents of Sarah Odding, who married Phillip Sherman (Shearman).

Patricia Law Hatcher, in her article #S21 | Reconstructing Sarah (Odding) Sherman, in The American Genealogist, persuasively argues that Sarah Odding's father was William Oddyn. The maiden name of William Oddyn's wife Margaret is not known.

Biography

Sarah Odding, only child of William Oddyn and Margaret (_____), was born in Essex, probably Braintree, before 21 October 1612, the date of her father's will. Sarah married Philip Sherman probably in early 1634,and they moved to Portsmouth with her mother and stepfather.<ref>Roy V. Sherman and other genealogies give a birth date of December 1634 for their first child. No substantiating source is known, but the date is reasonable.</ref> Sherman became the first General Recorder of RhodeIsland (family genealogies call him "Secretary").<ref>John Eliot's record and "Philip Sherman," Anderson, Great Migration Begins, 3:1670-73.</ref> Sarah and Philip had eleven children, all of whom survived to adulthood. <ref>"Philip Sherman," Anderson, Great Migration Begins, 3:1672.</ref> Sarah was named in her husband's will 31 July 1681.<ref>"Philip Sherman," Anderson, Great Migration Begins, 3:1671.</ref> )Her date of death is not known.

Birth ===:: BEF 21 OCT 1612 prob: Braintree, co Essex, ENG<ref>#S21 </ref><ref name=RootsWeb>#S614 </ref>:: The date, "before 21 Oct 1612" is used because that is the date of her father's will in which she is mentioned. Her exact birth date is unknown.

Marriage

:: Husband: Sherman-726|Philip Sherman :: 1633 Portsmouth, Newport, RI:: 1633 Roxbury, Boston, Suffolk Co., MA<ref name=RootsWeb/><ref>#S18</ref><ref>#S24</ref>:: Some reports suggest they married in RI. There was no RI before 1638. The marriage therefore must have have been in England or Roxbury. From Wikipedia: : The Roxbury church records give this account of Sherman, "He came into the land in the year 1632 [sic; should read 1633], a single man, & after married Sarah Odding, the daughter o[f] the wife of John Porter by a former husband. This man was of melancholy temper, he lived honestly & comfortably among us several years, upon a just calling went forEngland & returned again with a blessing: but after his father-in-lawJohn Porter was so carried away with these opinions of familism & schism he followed them & removed with them to the Iland, he behaved himself sinfully in these matters (as may appear in the story) & was cast out of the church." : In the list of admissions to Roxbury church, member #95 was "Sarah Odding. She was step-daughter to John Porter, & came with her parents &was after married to Philip Sharman of this church" [RChR 79].

This couple are close relatives of Lurie's. Philippa was born Oct. 1, 1652 in Portsmouth, Newport, RI, the daughter of Philip Sherman and Sarah Odding. She had a twin brother Philip; they were the youngestof 14 children in the family. Philip Sherman was born Feb. 5, 1609/10 in Dedham, Co. Essex, England, and died 1687 in Portsmouth. Sarah Odding was born Feb 5, 1608/09 in Madron, Co. Cornwall, England, and died before 1696 in Kingston, Washington Co., RI. They were married May14, 1634 in Roxbury, MA.

Lurie is descended from Philip Sherman and Sarah Odding's son Sampson, who married Isabel Tripp. Their daughter Sarah married Joseph Chase, who was a first cousin of Philipa Sherman's husband Benjamin. We have more info on the family connections; let us know what you'd be interested in. How are you descended from the Chase-Sherman line?
