Biography

Sarah (parents unknown) married, probably about 1582, John Parkhurst, son of Christopher Parkhurst. John was baptized 29 Oct 1554 at Saint Mary's Guildford, Surrey, and died in 1611 at Ipswich, Suffolk. She was probably the Sarah Parkhurst who married at Saint Stephen, Ipswich, 7 Jan 1611/12 Benjamin Cole.[1]
Sara is provided for in the will of her first husband, John. The will of John Parkhurst of St. Mary Quay, clothier, dated 29 Mar 1610, mentions wife Sara, son George, son John, and daughters Thamar, Hellen, and Sara (the latter two not yet 21). Only Hellen's baptism is recorded anywhere nearby, 7 Jan? 1598/9 in St. Mary-at-the-Quay.[2]
John made a will 29 Mar 1610, proven 7 Jun 1611:[1]
John Parkhurst of the parish of Saynte Marye Keye, in Ipswich, Suffolk; Clothier . . . to wife, Sara all household stuff, as bedding, brass, pewter, linen and woolen, and the annual rent of £8 to be paid half yearly for life . . . to son George all shopstuff, all implements of trade as a shearman, all my books of what title and print, and all the rest of my goods and stock, movable and immovables . . . to son John 100 marks at age of 21 . . . to daughter Thamar the annual rent of £5 to be paid her half yearly for life . . . to daughter Hellen £50 at 21 years or marriage . . . my executor to put forth to best profit the portions of said John and Hellen for their futher education and up bringing . . . son George to be sole executor . . . cousin Nicholas Babbe of Nedeham Markett, supervisor, & he to receive 20s for his pains. Executor to give to the supervisor a bond of £300 for the faithful performance of my will. Witnesses: Nicholas Babbe, scriptore, Jno Parkhurst, Samuel Pecke, Edward Catherall. (Ref: Prerogative Court of Canterbury, Wood-50)
The large bond of £300 would indicate that John was probably a well to do man, by the standards of the day.
John and Sara had the following children:[1][3][4]
