About Sarah “Sally” Wilcox (Adams)

Sarah Adams (called "Sally" by all who knew her) was the fifth born child and third daughter of Revolutionary War Soldier Lt. John Adams III and Chloe Curtis.

(Note: there are many genealogies on the internet that state that Sally's mother was Chloe Rose, but that is in error; however, the mistake has proliferated into tens of thousands of genealogies and spread into records like a virus. To see details of how this is proven, click on the link below to Sarah's mother, Chloe Curtis Adams)

Sarah (Sally) Adams married Rufus Wilcox, a soldier under the command of her father's company, who was under the command of Rufus' father Capt. Sylvanus Wilcox. The Adams and Wilcox families were obviously close in the rural lands of Alford.

Rufus and Sally lived most of their lives in Alford, Massachusetts; however, after the death of husband Rufus, Sally moved to Ohio with all or most of her adult children except daughter Chestina.

Their one daughter (Chestina) who didn't move to Ohio married Lester Leadbetter (son of Rev. Thomas Leadbetter and Anna Rowley) from the neighboring township of Richmond in Berkshire County, Massachusetts. Lester and Chestina moved to Union township (later split off and called Maine twp) in Broome County, New York between the village of Union Center and East Maine not far from where the Greater Binghamton Airport currently operates. Anna's parents Thomas and Anna Leadbetter also moved to the town of Maine in Broome Co., New York.

Rufus and "Sally" had at least 10 children, all born in Alford, Berkshire Co., Massachusetts:

1 - Julia Wilcox (abt 1783 - ?) m. Milton Adams
2 - Nancy Wilcox (b. 04 Jan 1787) m. Dr. Frederick "Francis" Hamlin (also known as "Judge" Hamlin)
3 - Sarah "Sally" Wilcox (b. 26 Jan 1789) no further record
4 - Ephraim A. Wilcox (b.20 Aug 1791) m. Sarah Wolverton
5 - Chloe Louise Wilcox (b. 10 Oct 1793) m. Ephraim Herrick
6 - Chestina Wilcox (b. 27 Apr 1795) m. Lester Leadbetter
7 - Laura "Laurie" Wilcox (b. 25 May 1797) m. Francis Herrick
8 - Caroline Wilcox (9 June 1799) m. Hiram Francis Hamlin
9 - John Wilcox (abt 1802 - aft 1820) no further record
10 - Walter Wilcox (1806 - 1813) died young

Sally moved to Wellington, Lorain Co., Ohio around 1815 to live with her son Ephraim and his wife Sarah and family. Many of the widowed Sally's children moved to Ohio as well. Her daughter Chloe and husband Ephraim Herrick; and daughter Nancy and husband Dr. Frederick Hamlin; and daughter Caroline and husband Hiram Hamlin also moved to Ohio settling in Lorain County. Other children of Sally might have likewise moved to Ohio, but that is unknown. It is assumed that the matriarch Sally is interred in West Herrick Cemetery in Wellington, Ohio, but either without a headstone or one that has deteriorated and is no longer legible.
