About Sarah Tappan

Although many internet "trees" have this Sarah Wilkinson as being married to Josiah Cranmer, I do not think that is correct, and have evidence to support that. This particular Sarah Wilkinson, the daughter of James Wilkinson and Mary Dunham, appears to be the Sarah that married Isaac Tappan of Woodbridge, New Jersey on 14 March 1745/6. Both Sarah and Isaac were from Woodbridge; both their births and their marriage are recorded there. The marriage record of Isaac Tappan and Sarah lists James Wilkinson as her father. The Sarah Wilkinson that married Josiah Cranmer is "of Long Island" and so is not likely this Sarah. (Some trees even list her as the husband of both Josiah and Isaac, but as she married Isaac at age 18 and died at age 47 -- and Isaac outlived her by 10 years -- that is clearly not possible.)

The probate record of James Wilkinson, I believe, fully resolves the issue of Sarah's parents and spouse. The will was proved 9 February 1748/9 and the entry from the Calendar of New Jersey Wills (Vol 2, page 528) states the following:

1748-9, Feb. 9. Wilkinson. James, of Woodbridge, Middlesex Co., Doctor. Int. Adm'x, Mary Wilkinson, widow. Isaac Tappen, of same place, yeoman, fellow bondsman. Lib. E, p. 261. 1748-9, Feb. 17. Inventory (£272.15.6) includes negro man, £40: negro woman and child, £40. Made by Abraham Tappen and David Donham, Jun'r.

This establishes his widow as "Mary," includes a reference to Isaac Tappan, and mentions David Donham, Jr. which ties Wilkinson to the Dunham family. David Dunham, Jr. was the grandson of Jonathan Singletary Dunham; Sarah's mother, Mary Dunham, was a granddaughter of Jonathan Singletary Dunham.

This Sarah Wilkinson, the daughter of James Wilkinson and Mary Dunham, is not the Sarah Wilkinson that married Josiah Cranmer. This Sarah Wilkinson married Isaac Tappan. There are birth records, a marriage record, and evidence from James Wilkinson's will that establishes that the daughter of James Wilkinson and Mary Dunham married Isaac Tappan (and only Isaac Tappan). Here is my entry for Sarah Wilkinson where those documents can be reviewed. Sarah Tappan

Josiah Cranmer married a Sarah Wilkinson "of Long Island."
