Biography

Sarah Colby was the daughter of John Colby and Mary Frame and the great-great-grand-daughter of well known immigrant Anthony Colby. She was born, along with her twin Mary, on 28 May 1714 at Amesbury, Essex, Massachusetts[1]

She married Deacon John Tewksbury (spelled many ways) on 25 Nov 1736 at Amesbury.[2] (the vital record transcription noted that his name was entered as "John jr").

Sarah was related to John's mother Hannah Colby; the Anthony Colby noted above was their common ancestor. Hannah was his grand-daughter through Anthony's son Thomas; Sarah was his great-great-granddaughter through Anthony's son John followed by two more generations of "John" (that made Sarah and Hanna first cousins twice removed if you're keeping score at home). The births of most of their children as listed in his will appear in Amesbury vital records transcribed as "Tuxbry" or "Tuxbury"[1] in several cases he is noted as "John jr".

It is worth noting that their son John appears to have married a Mary Colby in Amesbury on 2 Apr 1761 where he was, in his turn, noted as "John Jr". Exactly which Mary Colby this was, is not determined as both the Colby and Tewksbury names were so common in the area.[2] That John would seem to be same who made his will 26 March 1801 in which he names sons Ezekiel, Gideon and John (executor) and daughters Molly (wife of John Honeyford) and Judith (wife of Nathaniel Flanders), all children of John (in some cases 'jr', others not) and Mary born in Amesbury.[3]

His will was dated 9 October 1789 and names wife Sarah; sons Daniel (executor), John, Henry, Timothy; daughters Meriam (wife of Joseph Foster), Sarah (wife of Jonathan Gould), Jerusha (unmarried), Mary (wife of Nathan Gould), Hannah (unmarried). Presented for probate and witnesses took oath, etc., 28 February 1791. Approved and allowed 4 April 1791.[4]

A death or burial record has not been found for John but a probate of 28 Feb 1791 proves that he was dead by that date.

Sarah seems to have lived until 25 Nov 1803 when the death entry in Amesbury vital records for "Sarah Tuxbury, widow" would seem to be hers.[5]
