This is a bad merge !!! Sarah,(dau/of Thomas Newsom and Alice Stagg Newsom) was never the wife of SAMUEL VARNADO I, or the mother of his children.

Sarah Newsom was the granddaughter of William Newsom III. He was the first Newsom to be born in North America. William III 's wife, Anne, was the daughter of Elizabeth Spencer and Maj. Robert Sheppard. Elizabeth was the dau. of William Spencer, Ancient Planter and Alice Lightfoot, dau. of John Lightfoot, Ancient Planter. William Spencer and John Lightfoot were two of the very first Jamestown settlers to be granted Private Land in Virginia. By the time Sarah was born, The Newsom Family had grown into one of the most prominent families in Virginia, They were of the Landed Gentry of Virginia and in the early days of the colony the Landed Gentry would have been very protective of their class. It would have been possible, but highly unlikely for Sarah to have married out of her class

SAMUEL VARNADO I was the son Leonard Vaenado, a Huguenot refugee in England, who was forced to flee to America because of persecution by the Anglican Church. Samuel was born in the Orangeburg District of South Carolina, grew up there and purchased land there near his parents. He served for a time during American Revolution in the Orangeburg area, but his allegiance is questionable. After the Revolution, Samuel moved west with a brother. The Varnadoes settled in Mississippi and Louisiana. There is NO documentary evidence, historically or genealogically, to support that SAMUEL VARNADO I either married a member of the Newsom family or ever lived any where near them during the late 17th thru the mid 18th century.

There is, however, genealogical evidence that SAMUEL VARNADO II (1793-1874), the son of Samuel I, did marry a Keziah Newsom (1798-1881). This Keziah Newsom was the dau. of John Newsom. John was grandson of Soloman Newsom Sr. who was the brother of Thomas Newsom II (f/o Sarah Newsom).

The marriage of Sarah Newsom to Drury Clanton (1744-1782) is supported by genealogical evidence of multiple marriages between the Newsom family and the Holt family, land records establishing proximity of the two families, the historical record of the Holt family of James City/Surry Co. Va. evidence of the marriage of Tapahannas Holt to Thomas Newsom II (2nd marriage). Taphannas Holt was Sarah Newsom's step-mother (also her husband's AUNT) Documentary evidence of the marriage of Mary Seward Holt to William Clanton (my 6X Great-grandparents) in 1708. They were the parents of John Clanton Sr. who married Lucinda "Lucy" Wyche, dau. of James Wyche Sr. (the Wyche lineage is an UNBROKEN LINE dating to the time of William, the Conqueror). John and Lucy were the parents of Drury who married Sarah Newsom. Mary Seward Holt was the niece of Taphannas Holt - Robert Clanton
