Biography

John Fish, Sr., was born on 21 January 1621 in Market Harborough, Great Bowden, Leicestershire, England. He married Margaret Eland [SIC] about 1650. He arrived in the American Colonies before 1654 and died before 1710 in Stonington, New London, Connecticut. According to the research of Jennie M. Ames in 1940 (see her paper "Genealogy of One Line of the Fish Families... .), "John Fish of New London and Stonington, Conn. according to the biographical sketch prepared by John D. Fish, a descendent, which is found in 'Wheeler's History of Stonginton,' was of Stratford, Conn. in 1654, and probably for several years previously. His sister-in-law was a member of his household and her name was Sarah Eland, from which it is judged the family name of his wife was _______ Eland. The Elands were an ancient and knightly family of Yorkshire, Eng.

On Sep. 29, 1655, he sold all his land in Stratford and that year John Fish, wife and children appear in New London. In 1668, when a census was ordered by the Colonial Authorities to be taken of the heads of families in Stonington, John Fish was one of the forty-three persons enumerated. He had a twelve acre home lot granted him there which he retained throughout his life. His son Samuel, sold it Dec. 16, 1710 to James Dean. In 167_ he and his son Samuel were among the volunteers who went forth to fight the Narragansett Indians and received grants of land in Voluntown for their services. (John having died previously, his grant of land was laid out to his son Samuel)."

Ames further writes that, "Aug. 22, 1679, Mr. John Fish was chosen and unanimously voted for school-master of the Town of Stonington, to instruct children in reading, writing, arithmetic and grammer, 'such as shall be inclined.' Dec 5, 1680, he was admitted as a member of the Congregational Church of Stonington, and the same day his adult children, Samuel, Mary and John were baptized. They were probably children of his first wife. He married for a third wife, Hannah (Palmer)(Hewitt) Sterry, a daughter of Walter and Rebecca (Short) Palmer. He was a land surveyor and laid out some of the public grants. By grants and purchase he became proprietor of considerable tracts in Groton, Stonington and other nearby towns."

In 1679, schooling systems emerged, and John Fish, Sr. became the first schoolmaster in Stonington, conducting classes and lessons in his home. Education was the most important thing to the New England colonists, even allowing girls, African Americans and Native Americans, and slaves to learn basic literacy skills. Most families throughout New England had six or more children in each household, giving John Fish, Sr. plenty of students. He also gave lectures and insights about marriage and maintenance of a solid family.

Notes

Hannah was John's third wife. [12]

Although the Fish family anthology (1948) cites a divorce pertaining to a second wife of this John Fish, Wheeler (1900) does not present any discussion about such divorce as may have taken place prior to his marrying Hannah (Palmer/Hewitt) Sterry. In the interest of judicious respect for people who have preceded us, perhaps it would be best not to propagate tales of events about which we hold no intrinsic knowledge. [JRF]
