M, November 19, 1863, to serve three years; captured at Martinsburg, Va., July 3, 1864; paroled at Charleston, S. C., December 6, 1864; transferred, April 17, 1865, to Co. SERVICE: Occupation of Newport News May 29, 1861. Action at Big Bethel, Va., June 10. Duty at Camp Hamilton and Newport News, Va., until June, 1862. Action between Monitor and Merrimac in Hampton Roads March 8, 1862. Joined Army of the Potomac on the Peninsula June 5. Actions near Fair Oaks June 20, 23 and 24. Oak Grove, near Fair Oaks, June 25. Chancellorsville Campaign April 27-May 6. Battle of Chancellorsville May 1-5. Mustered out May 25, 1863, expiration of term. Regiment lost during service 79 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 3 Officers and 31 Enlisted men by disease. Total 113. Private John F Duesler's Enlistment Ended: July 19, 1863. He Re-Enlisted: With a Horse that he funded: July 19, 1863., Company M, 1st New York Veteran Cavalry Regiment, Under: Colonel Robert F. Taylor. Company M was consolidated with Company A, and the former replaced by a new Company M., Martinsburg, West Virginia 3 July 1864: Private John F Duesler was thrown from his horse during battle and: Shattered his Jaw, Hip & Shoulder, paralyzed on his whole R side. Summarily captured & taken to The Civil War's Most Brutal POW Camp! Andersonville Military Prison / Camp Sumpter, Georgia whereupon John served: 6 M, 3 D and was then transferred to Florence Confederate Stockade, South Carolina.
(WIA) Wounded In Action, (POW) Prisoner Of War, Private John F Duesler,Civil War Survivor, Paralyzed, was Discharged and returned home to Baldwinsville, NY January 6, 1865, Sergeant John F Duesler did not apply for Pension until: June 29, 1880.
John F Duesler joined the (GAR) Grand Army of the Republic 1881.
