A Patriot of the American Revolution for VIRGINIA with the rank of ENSIGN. DAR Ancestor # A078588

Alexander McNutt is the son of John "Scotch Johnny" McNutt and Katherine Rebecca Anderson. He married Rachel Grigsby, on 7 Jan 1790 at her Fruithill Home in Rockbridge Co., VA by Rev. Samuel Houston. She is the daughter of John Grigsby and Elizabeth Porter. They had 13 known McNutt Children, listed on his wifes' site.

He served in the Revolutionary War in the Rockbridge County VA Militia, in 1780 as a Sergeant under Capt. Jas Gilmore and Brig. Gen. Daniel Morgan and as an Ensign. (See the VA Genealogist, Vol. 43, #2, Apr-Jun 1999, p 144 and John H. Gwathmey's History Register of VA In the Revolution, p 538.

According to Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission of the Virginia General Assembly, Interim Special Report: Revolutionary War Veteran Gravesites in Virginia, House Document No. 91 online (3/8/2000) at http://jlarc.state.va.us/reports/rpt249.pdf, page 7, Appendix D; buried in the Independent City: Lexington; McNutt Alexander 1754 - 1812; buried at Stonewall Jackson Memorial Cemetery, other info: Sergeant; sources: 2,63.

Henrietta Hamilton McCormick, owned Alexander McNutt's powder horn used in the Revolutionary War's Battle of Cowpens, SC. His father died in that battle. See photo.

He died intestate. His wife inherited her share of his estate and lived there until Jan 1840. His son in law James McChesney handled the administration of his estate, including about 125 acres in Rockbridge Co., VA. See 1841 Chancery case in Rockbridge Co., 108 pages, Jas MCCHESNEY& wife vs Heirs of Benj McNutt, Etc. See page 7, plus page 65 has plat map.

I note in the Jackson Memorial Cemetery Survey, Complete to 1960 (sic) by Col. William Couper, available at the Washington and Lee Library Special Collections Dept., page 12 says that the monument says: A tribute by his daughter Sarah Sims of Vicksburg, Miss. to the memory of Alexander McNutt who died March 29, 1812 aged 56 years and to her mother Rachael McNutt who died Jan. 7, 1840, aged 69 years.

The monument is about 6' tall in the shape of an obelisk and it is hard to read but clearly lists his name and death date. GPS: 37° 46' 49 N 079° 26' 48 W, South Main Street.

Photo shows the readable part of Alexander's inscription and the full photo below it shows Rachael's inscription, on the reverse side.
