He stood 5' 7" tall and had light hair and blue eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty-four in Lancaster October 4, 1861, and mustered into federal service that day as a private with Co. E, 79th Pennsylvania Infantry. Detailed to the pioneer corps on December 1, 1862, he remained in that capacity for some time. He re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer February 9, 1864, at Chattanooga, Tennessee, re-mustered there February 12, and promoted to corporal May 1, 1864. He suffered a "slight" wound to the left arm at the battle of Peachtree Creek, Georgia, on July 20, 1864, and again wounded at the battle of Bentonville on March 19, 1865, although where on the body is not stated. He was promoted to sergeant April 23, 1865, and honorably discharged with his company July 12, 1865. At discharge, he purchased his Springfield rifle and accouterments for $6.00.
