At the age of 12 years old,Jacob Foster was placed by his father,Timothy Foster to learn the Blacksmith trade with, John Whitman of Thompson,Connecticut.Jacob's younger brother,Joseph Foster also was an apprentice with John Whitman.Once they completed their training both,Jacob and his brother,Joseph Foster would go to work at the same Blacksmith shop in Thompson Connecticut.

In 1775,Jacob Foster enlisted to serve in the American Revolution as did his father,Timothy Foster Sr(1715-1795) and thirteen of his seventeen full and half siblings.Making a total of fourteen men from the same family to serve in the American Revolution.All fourteen are as follows....

Years later while applying for a Revolutionary War pension,Jacob testified in open court which was recorded in an affidavit on Aug 24,1832.The following quoted accounts is,Jacob Foster himself detailing his Revolutionary War service...

"In the year 1776 the first of February I enlisted or volunteered at Thompson state of Connecticut in the company commanded by,Capt Green in Col Douglas' Regiment for the term of two months and was marched to Cambridge and Roxbury in Ma where I stayed until discharged which was the 2nd day of April 1776"

"In the month of June or July 1776 I enlisted at Thompson for a term of eight months in the company commanded by,Capt Stephen Lyon ,1st Lt Josiah Childs & 2nd Lt Kimball & Ensign Mason in Col Chester's Regiment.We were marched to Norwalk Ct and then embarked on board a vesal sailed to Norwalk disembarked and marched to New York City where I was at the time of the Battle of Roanoak Island and it was given up and afterwards State Troops in Col Williams Regiment.I was then marched to Powlins Hook in Newberry from there to the English was marched to Volentines Hill near Kings Bridge New York where I was transferred to Capt Chandlins Company of Ct neighborhood near Fort Lee then to Kingsferry where I was dismissed by,Col McClellan ,being there months in said Chandins Company and returned home the last of November 1776"

"In the first of December four days after I arrived home from the last service before mentioned,I was again called to march in Capt Chandlers company in Col Denisons Regiment and marched to Provedence ,R I where I stayed and served two months and returned home"

"In May 1777 I was drafted in the Militia company commanded by Capt Chandler in,Col Tyler's Regiment & Col McClellan & Maj Gordon Thompson and ordered to Groton,CT where I was employed In building ___ Griswold and after the Fort was compleated one half the troops were sent home but it fell to my lot to stay and I contined in service this time two months"

"In the year 1780 ,I was a Sergeant in a Militia company of Sharon,Vermont commanded by, Capt Ebenezer Parkhurst and during that year we were in constant fear of Indians. I had command of a small party and went out two or three times visionnoctnity once to Pittsford and up the mountains and on the 16 of Oct 1780 the Town of Royalton was burned by the Indians when I pursued them to Brookfield and in this year in service as above I think I was out one month or more.

"I was born in the town of Dudley,County of Worcester state of Massachusetts Aug 27,1756.When I was about 12 years old I was put by my father with one John Whitman of Thompson,CT to learn the Blacksmith trade while I lived at the time the Revolution commenced.I lived in said Thompson right all the time until 1800 when I removed to Sharon,Vermont where I lived until 1818 then removed to Royalton,Vermont where I now live.I know of no evidence but what accompanies this declaration that I can substantiate my service.I had no discharges and I think I never had one,nor any documentary Evidence .The record of my age I suppose is in Dudley,Mass Town Clerks office. Deacon's Samuel Bascomb & Ruben Spalding___will testify as to my character for truth and veracity and of the general belief in the neighborhood of my service"(signed):Jacob Foster.

In Thompson,Connecticut on April 12,1781 Jacob Foster is married to Susannah Fairbanks.Susannah was the daughter of Samuel Fairbanks(1728-1794)and Mehitabel Hine(1739-?)of Killingly,Connecticut.

A few years after they marry,March 21,1784,Jacob and Susannah become members of the North Woodstock Congregational Church in Woodstock,Connecticut.While living in Woodstock,Jacob and Susannah have the following five children

2)Unnamed Daugther b April 13,1788,d 1788(no baptism record)

4)Chester Foster b Sep 9,1793,d Apr 27,1884

On Dec 4,1793 Jacob and his wife Susannah are dismissed as members of the North Woodstock Congregational Church in Woodstock,Connecticut.

In 1800 Jacob and his wife Susannah move their family to Sharon,Vermont.The whole family are recorded living in Sharon ,Vermont in the 1810 Federal Census of that year.In 1818 the family removed to Royalton,Windsor County,Vermont

In 1832 at the age of 76,Jacob Foster applies for a Revolutionary War Pension using the above mentioned testimony and a letter written by his brother,Joseph Foster as proof of his service.Jacob's Pension is approved and he begins receiving it on June 21,1833.He receives his pension until the time of his death in 1836.

After his death his widow,Susannah Foster receives a widows pension in the amount of $36.66 per annum.Susannah was on the Pensioner Rolls of the Bellows Fall,Vermont Agency and the Montpelier Agency.Her pension began on June 30,1843 and lasted until her death.

Both Jacob Foster and his wife Susannah are buried at the Broad Brook Cemetery in Sharon,Vermont.
