James was one of eleven children born to James and Elizabeth Darby Huntington. He married Hannah Curtis on May 24, 1765 in Norwich, New London, Connecticut and had twelve children together. He enlisted in the revolution with the 8th Company, 8th Regiment Connecticut Troops as a 3rd Sergeant on July 13 1775. He mustered out on December 17, 1775. Around 1785 he and his family moved from Norwich, Connecticut to Lebanon, Grafton County, New Hampshire. Then, around 1792, they moved to Royalton, Windsor County, Vermont. James was a farmer , a cabinet maker and was a member of the Masons.
