John Stiles, who died over 180 years ago, September 17, 1833 in Sylva, Macon County. John, who is the 3rd great grandfather of Oliver Stiles, 4th Great Grandfather of Ernest Stiles, Sr., was born 1 Feb 1757 in Lincoln County, NC., the son of Benjamin Stiles, an immigrant from England. His mother was probably an Indian named Halijohn.

John enlisted in the Continental Line in Savannah, Georgia , March 4, 1776, during the Revolutionary War. He served 16 months in Capt. John Green’s Sixth Battalion. He was discharged April 4, 1777 at the rank of Sergeant.

He married Sarah Stiles (last name unconfirmed) in 1774, probably in Georgia. We document 11 children, the first being born in 1775, the last in 1800.

John owned land in Burke County in 1780. In 1790 he is listed on the census in Lincoln County. In 1798, he purchased both sides of Scott Creek in then Buncombe County, now known as Sylva, NC. In 1800 he is listed in Buncombe County, probably still today's Sylva. It appears he farmed for 35 years along the Scotts Creek, in now Jackson County, NC.

After Sarah died in 1818, John married again to Lucy Beasley, a 43 year old widow with 3 children. They are documented as being married in Haywood County, now Jackson County, NC. His son, Charles, a Methodist minister, performed the ceremony. John & Lucy were charter members of Scotts Creek Baptist Church, which still exists in Sylva, NC.

In 1832, he was granted a pension of $8 a month for his service during the Revolutionary War. His second wife, Lucy received a Revolutionary War pension and 160 acres of bounty land. Copies of some of these related documents are posted with this memorial.

John left a will, signed and sealed on May 13, 1833. He is buried in Dills Cemetery, in Sylva, Jackson County, NC, next to his first wife, Sarah. Their graves lie atop a small hill amidst the beautiful mountains of Western NC.
