<p>Charles Stiles (born in 1792 in Lincoln Co., NC, and died after 1850, probably</p><p><p>in Polk Co., TN was the youngest son of John Stiles and his wife Sarah. </p></p><p><p>Not much is known about Charles. He was raised in NC, on his parents'</p></p><p><p>farm, which coveed both sides of Scotts Creek. On April 24, 1813, he married</p></p><p><p>Keshia McConnell ,born 1797 in Iredell Co., NC, and died after 1880</p></p><p><p>in Jackson Co., NC. She was the daughter of William McConnell and Rachel Adams of </p></p><p><p>Haywood Co., NC.</p></p><p><p>On April 16, 1816 John paid $500 tolease land for life from Charles and Benjamin,</p></p><p><p>Charles' older brother.</p></p><p><p>In 1837 Charles paid $16.20 to the state of NC to purchase 80 acres of land</p></p><p><p>bordering Savannah Creek in Macon Co.</p></p><p><p>Census records show that Charles and Kesiah remained in NC until at least</p></p><p><p>1843, when their last child, Thomas, was born. By 1850 they had moved to</p></p><p><p>Polk Co., TN, where Charles earned a living as a miller. His son Albert had moved there earlier and worked for the Raht Copper Mining Co.</p></p><p><p>Charles died sometime befor 1860. Kesiah took Thomas her youngest child, back to NC, where</p></p><p><p>they were listed on the 1860 Jackson Co. census as members of the household of</p></p><p><p>E. Ash and Marcus L. Ash, Kesiah's daughter and son in law.</p></p><p><p>The 1880 census for Jackson County shows "Casiah" Stiles, age 83, living with her</p></p><p><p>grandson William Stiles. Her grave site is unknown.
