John Jackson was a black pioneer, a Civil War veteran and a well-respected farmer. He settled in the Salem area and was a memeber of the Hayesville Farmer's Club. He was a friend of Adam Stephens, a well-known pioneer who has a Salem school named after him. In fact their graves are not far from one another at Salem's historic Hayesville Cemetery.
