Richard was just 16 when he enlisted in THE Confederate States of America with Capt. Noah Grant's Co.H later called the 5th Regiment Missouri Infantry on Jan. 1 1862 inn Springfield, Missouri.

In July 1862 he was promoted to 1st Corpl. and the Company of Capt. Chas. H. Thomas. Co.H

Dec. 1 1862 Promoted from Corpl. to O.S. March & April 1863 1st Sgt.

"May & June 1863 -- Missing since Battle of Port Gibson May 1 1863."

"July & Aug. 1863 -- Killed in Action at the Battle of Port Gibson, May 12 1863."
