Samuel was born in Harper's Field,Ohio, the town is now defunct. He was the son of John and Elizabeth Ann Wheeler Emery of Massachusetts and New York. He married Henrietta Race, the daughter of Andrew Race, on June 4, 1848 in Maumee,Ohio. Samuel was a wagon maker. He and Henrietta had ten children.
