"William enlisted in Company A of the 31st Infantry, serving in the Union Army, and achieved the rank of fifth sergeant. His personal description states he stood five foot nine and one half inches, having dark hair and eyes. Recovering from a wound suffered in 1862, he returned to Perry County., Illinois Although wounded a second time, he survived to be discharged in 1864, only four days before the birth of his first child. William moved his family frequently within Illinois, before joining some of Nancy's cousins on a journey to Crawford County, Kansas in 1880, then Cherokee County in 1888. Nancy gave birth to her fifth child and only known daughter in Kansas.
William was 12 years old when he moved to Evansville, Illinois, with his parents, and six years later located at Baldwin, Randolph Co., IL. He remained there until 1852, and then went to Perry Co., Il, where he farmed, and worked at the trade of millwright and carpenter."
William North served in the Union Army during the American Civil War in Company A, 31st Illinois Infantry Regiment. He entered service on 15 Aug 1861 and mustered in on 18 Sep 1861 at Cairo, IL. He mustered out on 20 Sep 1864 in Springfield, IL.
