John was granted the manor of Iron Acton in 1343. He was the Sheriff of Gloucestershire in 1363.
The church of St. James in Iron Acton has monuments to the Poyntz family. There is a half effigy of a knight in armour dating from the end of the reign of Edward III, with a high helmet and camail plates on the shoulders and gauntlet. At the end of south aisle is the Poyntz chapel which has the effigy of another recumbent knight in armour of the same period with a high bassinet, camail, hauberk of mail, a sword belt below his hips, gauntleted hands folded over the breast. He is probably Sir John Poyntz, son of the first Sir Nicholas Poyntz and Maud, heiress of the Acton.
There is a slab incised with effigy of a knight in helmet and body plate and the inscription "Here lyth Robert Poyntz of Iren Acton and thys stepyl maked who dyed the fyftene day of Junne the year of owre Lord mccccxx (1320) of whose sowle God have mercy, Amen." and another slab with the incised effigy of his wife inscribed: "Here lyth Anne the first wife of Robert Poyntz of whos sowle God have mercy, Amen." On the south side of the chancel is the effigy of an unknown lady of about the same period.

Acton Court was owned by the Poyntz family from 1364-1680. King Henry VII is known to have stayed there in 1486, and King Henry VIII visited in 1535. When the last Poyntz died without a son and heir the house was sold and converted into a small farmhouse.
Over the years the building deteriorated rapidly but incredibly, because of this neglect, it has remained mostly untouched and intact - a unique Tudor building.
