  • From https://archives.rep-am.com/2016/11/21/haight-founder-of-area-viney...:
    • "LITCHFIELD – Sherman P. Haight Jr., founder of Haight Vineyard and a leader in promoting Connecticut’s fledgling winery industry in the 1970s, ’80s and ’90s, has died in Virginia.
    • "Haight, a World War II veteran who was living in Hamilton, Va., passed away on Oct. 17 at the age of 93 after a long illness. Haight Vineyard, established in 1975, was the first winery in Connecticut and served as a model for many of the wineries that followed in the state.
    • "“He was a colorful character who was liked by everyone visiting the vineyard,” Haight Vineyard’s former winemaker and General Manager Wayne Stitzer of Morris said Sunday. “His passion for the industry, for planting and growing grapes, and for making wine was evident every time people came in for a tour.”
    • "Haight, who sold Haight Vineyard in 2007 and moved to Virginia, decided to plant grapes on his Chestnut Hill Road farm in the mid-1970s, making him a pioneer at a time when there were no established wineries in Connecticut.
    • "He also defied logic by successfully planting varieties of European grapes in the cool, damp New England climate. The vineyard produced a long list of award-winning wines, including a champagne-style wine, under Haight’s leadership.
    • "One of Haight’s most notable accomplishments came in 1992 when he convinced the governor at the time, Lowell P. Weicker Jr., to endorse the idea of a Connecticut Wine Trail as a promotional tool for state wineries.
    • "The wine trail was officially opened during a ceremony at Haight Vineyard that was presided over by Weicker.
    • "“To this day I don’t believe he gets the credit he deserves for the start of the Connecticut Wine Trail,” Stitzer said of Haight. “None of the literature about it mentions his name, and that’s a shame.”
    • "Haight brought many special events to the vineyard to help to promote its wine, including the popular Taste of the Litchfield Hills. The event each June featured samples of food from local restaurants and was a major draw for tourists.
    • "A gentlemanly type with an easygoing manner, Haight was known for the signature bow tie and vest he wore at the vineyard.
    • "During World War II, Haight served in the Army’s 7th Cavalry Reconnaissance Platoon of the 1st Cavalry Division in the South Pacific. He was discharged in 1945 with the rank of first lieutenant.
    • "An avid outdoorsman, Haight was a member of the Litchfield County Foxhounds from 1948 to 1981 and was president of the Masters of Foxhounds Association from 1978 to 1981 and the U.S. Pony Club from 1961 to 1964. In 1985, he helped found the Museum of Hounds and Hunting at Morven Park in Leesburg, Va.
    • "Haight is survived by his wife, Margaret; three daughters, Nancy Hall Haight of Cartersville, Ga; Mary Haight Armstrong Kennett Square, Pa; Katharine Grahame Haight of Mattapoisett, Mass.; his sister, Frances Tracy Haight Griswold of Litchfield; two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
