Brief overview:
On 22nd April 2013, Shirley (63), who lived alone in her house in Egret Lane, Umhlanga, was found naked and bound on her bed, her legs tied apart, and a piece of rope in her mouth. The bloodied mattress indicated towards a violent sexual assault.
Police were alerted when a gardener, Vusi Shozi, who worked nearby, who had borrowed R50.00 from Shirley, became concerned when she didn't answer her phone. Seeing a broken window Shozi and a neighbour went inside the yard to investigate.
Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said a port-mortem would confirm the cause of death and if she had been raped. A discarded cap found at the scene was sent for DNA testing.
