About Shmuel Halevi Jungreis, of Pápa

Kever avos - the grave sites of my great-grandfathers by R' Esther Jungreis

We started out by driving to Csece, a tiny shtetl where my great, great grandfather, going back to the 1700's, HaRav Shmuel HaLevi Jungreis, the son of the holy Rav Yitzchak HaLevi of Pupa, and the father of the world-renowned Menuchos Osher, HaRav Osher Anshil HaLevi Jungreis, the Csengerer Tzaddik, was buried. To reach his grave, we had to knock on the door of an old peasant who immediately recognized the name Jungreis and led us over a crust of snow to the far end of his field where the Ohel stood. Rermarkably, although centuries had passed, the Ohel of Rav Shmuel stood in honor and dignity.

My father would often tell us of the special attention that HaRav Shmuel gave to the Torah learning of his son. On the night of his bar mitzva, the young Osher Anshil had a dream. In that dream, he found himself alone in the center of a shul, and. suddenly, four strangers appeared in the four corners of the room. Instantly, he recognized them. They were the patriarchs, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and the prophet Elijah.

Overwhelmed by what he saw, he started to tremble. Whom should he greet first? But even as he was weighing these considerations, he recalled the teaching, "Happy is he who sees Elijah in his dreams and extends to him greetings and is greeted by him in return...."

Immediately, Osher Anshils dilemma was resolved. First he would greet Elijah and then the patriarchs. Upon awakening, he related his dream to his father, Rabbi Shmuel, who, without delay, took him to the mikveh and then spent the entire day learning with him. From that day on, young Osher Anshil distinguished himself in his learning and was meticulous in his midos, chesed and loving kindness.
