Hinckley stating his great-grandfather Shubael Hinckley, of 'Old York' had 4 wives, 20 children and lived to 92. One Shubal Hinkley, of "a place called Number Four [now Steuben] not of any Town but in the County of Lincoln and State of Massachusetts Bay, in New England, husbandman," sold for 40 pounds to Isaac Patten 100 acres in said Number Four on the East side of Narraguagus River, deed dated mar. 23, 1779, recorded in Washington County Registry of Deeds Augh. 7, 1786, Vol. 1, Pg. 57. Sometime prior to the Revolution, a Shubael Hinckley settled on the east side of the river, then moved to the Invervale beyond the Archer place (Narraguagus). Sugael Hinckley is listed as a settler in Cherryfield, ME, in 1763. Shubael Hinkley, of Narragaugus, was in a company raised in No. 4, Pleasant River, Gouldsborough, Frenchman's Bay & Narragaugus, first in Dec. 12, 1777, in Capt. Reuben Dyer's Co., plus other service in defense of Machias. He is not in 1790 by himself; perhaps with a son? [Children from the presumed 5th marriage are listed and attributed to this Shubael since so many records seem to indicate it even though there seems to be enough conflicting data which would lead one to think the Shubael who lived in the Narraguagus River area might be an entirely different individual.][Working Copy - July 2004.FTW]
