  • Sydney Vaughan died in 1645 [not 1661]. Her husband Sir Frederick Hamilton married to his scecond wife Agnes Hepburn in 1646. In his will he names his wife as "Agnes". [the 1661 probate of Sidney Hamilton is TO her grandaughter Sidney, daughter of James Hamilton NOT for Sidney [Vaughan] Hamilton.

1656 Chancery Bill 28 Aug 1656 Filed by John Farrer, Esq of Dublin & Dame Dorothy his wife, relict & sole executrix of Sir William Ryves, deceased, against William and Barbara Latham, in which, after reciting that Sir William Ryves had lent William Latham of New Place, Londonderry, Esq, the sum of 100 pounds, trust moneys of John Bingley, Esq., and Dame Elizabeth his wife, daughter of Sir William Ryves, and afterwards wife of Alderman William Smyth, of Dublin & that William Latham married Barbara, only daughter and heir of Sir John Vaughan, Knight & that Latham & Vaughan had, on Dec 61639, executed their joint bond to Sir William to secure payment of the loan- the bill states that Latham and Vaughan were then [1656] both dead, and that Latham had appointed his daughter Barbara and only son William Latham executrix and executor of his will.... Sir John Vaughan it seems had another daughter, Sidney, the wife of the Hon. Frederick Hamilton, by whom she was the mother of Gustavous, first Viscount Boyne; and this I find confirmed by another bill in Chancery, in which Barbara Latham is stated to be "one of the daughters of Sir John". Sir John Vaughamn was Governor of Londonderry and obtained large grants of land in the county of Londonderry and Donegal. He was knighted February 2, 1616 by Lord Deputy Oliver St John and he died 1643... Henry L. Tottenham, p. 144 Notes and Queries Feb 1889.

Notes

The Castle Heritage Centre at Manor Hamilton has a number of records for Sir Frederick Hamilton including a letter Sidney wrote to her children in 1643 [so she was living then & archival records show their children were living in Glasgow]

Sir Frederick's will is dated 25 December, 1647, and is in the Scottish Record Office. Even though the document is called a will, it really is about the winding up of his business affairs and his assessment of what he is worth rather than stating who receives what upon his death. Listed are his outstanding debts to four of his business partners as well as the money due to his widow, Agnes (his second wife), according to the terms of her marriage contract. Mentioned also are his moveable assets (property which is not land) and includes six stone of silver plate worth 4,333 pounds and six shillings, curtains, tablecloths, napkins, two old feather beds, etc., which in total was valued at 5,840 pounds, 12 shillings

This document shows that at his death, his wife was named AGNES, not Sidney, so by Nov 1647, Sydney had died [probably in Ireland] & Sir Frederick had remarried.

According to a pamphlet printed by the Heritage Centre, Sidney died in 1645 & Sir Frederick Hamilton married in 1646 to Agnes Hepburn [her profile fields are also locked, with her name as "unknown"], daughter of Sir Robert Hepburn of Alderstown, Scotland.

... He died in 1647. He was twice married - first to Sidney, daughter of Sir John Vaughan, and then to Agnes, daughter of Sir Robert Hepburn...

Downloadable Pamphlet from the Heriage Centre at Manor Hamilton "...In 1645 Hamilton's wife, Sydney died and Hamilton remarried the following year. His new bride was Agnes Hepburn. Sir Frederick returned to Scotland in 1647 and died suddenly in Edinburgh in the November of that year. Following his death, his Castle still held a military presence but its end was nigh and in 1652 it was burned to the ground by a strong party of native Irish from North Connacht and Ulster".

Can Sidney Vaughan's date of death be corrected please; to 1645.
