Gaute Erlingson was first mentioned as a member of the king's council in 1277. He was then titled baron, a title that had replaced the old lieutenant's name. There were only a few persons who attained such a high rank; in the royal council in 1277, which numbered the foremost men in the country, besides Gaute in Tolga met only seven barons. Later he met Gaute in several contexts, including as governor of Stavnger, until 1288 when he was killed. It is an Icelandic saga script that tells about the murder, which is said to have happened by accident. The son Isaac hemna father his. It is not known who Erling, Gaute's father, was, but the position that Gaute held makes it probable that he was not the first lieutenant in the family. Gaute was married to a daughter of the high-ranking Gregorius Andersson and was thus directly connected to the royal family: Gregorius was married to Cecilie Håkonsdotter, daughter of King Håkon Håkonson, and she was born out of wedlock. The family connection to the royal family places the families on Tolga and Hesby in the forefront between the Norwegian great men. There were also new family ties: daughter Eyvor was married to Mr. Ogmund at Hesby, so there was royal blood on both sides. The son Isak took over at Tolga after his father, and Håkon was married to Holmfrid Erlingsdotter and bid on Reve. In Rogaland Historie- og Ættesogelag Årshefte 1967 page 155 it says that Gaute Erlingson was in great favor with King Magnus Lagabøter who gave Tolga (who was a crown estate) as a share and property for himself and his descendants. He was a landowner from 1276 until his death in 1288. (See also: Rogaland Historie- og Ættesogelag Årshefte 1968 page 6)

It is a tombstone on Reve "The large tombstone from the south aisle in Stavanger Cathedral "which was discovered when a new floor was laid in Stavanger Cathedral in 1875. In the autumn of 1965, the 37 tombstones found in 1875 were examined. The stone is 204 cm long, 99 cm wide above the head end and 78 cm above the foot end. It was 15 cm thick. History

Sigrid was married to Baron Gaute Erlingson paa Tolga. He is men- tioned the first time in 1275 as one of King Magnus Haakonson's fore- most men. He became a Baron in 1276 and before that he had been a liegeman. In 1280 he was one of seven chieftains who held the reins of government for the young king Eirik Magnusson. In 1288 he was murdered by a man Halvard av Harde paa Sandeid, who stabbed him, by mistaken identity. This happened in a church yard in Stavanger. Speedy punishment was inflicted upon him by Gaute's son Isak for this terrible deed. In those days it was: an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. Baron Isak killed Halvard as he tried to escape from the church where he was hiding. However, Isak was declared an outlaw arid was compelled to leave the country. He returned again in 1295. Gaute carried a coar of arms described as being a decorated cross and a closed helmet held up by four arms. Their children were: Er- ling, Isak, and Eyvor. Gaute's father was Erling Ivarson av Bjarkoy near Trondenes, south west of Tromso. He is mentioned in 1263, and married Gaute Arngeirsson's daughter. Erling's father was Ivar Bjarne son, the son of Bjarne Maardsson, mentioned in 1223, and married to Ragna Erlingsdatter, whose father was Erling Vidkunsson, who died about 1182. Gaute made substantial gifts to Alle Helgens church in Bergen, as did his brother Bjarne Erlingsson of Giske. This church was rebuilt in 1266 of stone, after the wooden structure burned down. Gaute Erlingson was also chancellor in Norway twelve years
