DAR Ancestor #: A043553
Silas Gates (1741 - 1781), son of Zebediah Gates (born 4 September 1699 Preston, New London County, Connecticut) and Mehitable Downing (1712 Preston, New London County, Connecticut), was born 5 July 1741 at New London, New London County, Connecticut; he died 6 April 1778 at New London, New London County, Connecticut. He married Mary White (23 December 1743 Windham, Windham County, Connecticut) on 23 September 1762 at Preston, New London County, Connecticut. Silas Gates served as a private in Captain Asa Bacon's company in Col. Chester's regiment in Connecticut in the Revolutionary War.
Sources conflict on Gates' cause of death: he may have died of smallpox, or he may have been killed during the burning of New London by Benedict Arnold. Further research is needed, as the burning of New London appears to have taken place several years after his death.
- New London was raided and nearly burned to the ground on September 6, 1781 in the Battle of Groton Heights, by Norwich native Benedict Arnold in an attempt to destroy the Revolutionary privateer fleet and supplies of goods and naval stores within the city."
