Discussion

Sources conflict on Gates' cause of death: he may have died of smallpox, or he may have been killed during the burning of New London by Benedict Arnold. Further research is needed, as the burning of New London appears to have taken place several years after his death.

  • New London was raided and nearly burned to the ground on September 6, 1781 in the Battle of Groton Heights, by Norwich native Benedict Arnold in an attempt to destroy the Revolutionary privateer fleet and supplies of goods and naval stores within the city."
