Simon was born in Finland on April 20, 1879, and he became a stout man with blue eyes and dark brown hair. He immigrated in 1899, and in 1904 was naturalized a citizen of the United States. Helmi was born in Finland in 1887, and she crossed the ocean in 1901. She became a citizen in 1905, and she married Simon late in 1907 or early in 1908. Their son Thomas was born in Montana early in 1912, their daughter Lilla (later Lela) was born in Massachusetts in 1913, and their son Marcus (later Mark) was born in Ohio in November of 1915. After 1919 Simon was known as Robert S. Maki. The Cliff Studio offered Photography, Portraits, Picture Frames and Picture Framing. Studio portraits on postal stock from the later 1920s or early 1930s blind stamped “MAKI STUDIO, Negaunee, Mich.” and a 1938 photo of the Republic Fire Department on a 12 by 14 inch mount blind stamped “Maki Studio, NEGAUNEE, MICH.” seem to have been the work of Vaino Maki."
