About Sir David Crichton of Cranston-Riddell
SIR DAVID CRICHTON OF CRANSTON-RIDDELL
Disputed Ancestry
The ancestry of Sir David Crichron of Cranston-Riddell, here treated, has not been satisfactorily identified. Clan MacFarlane claims that he was the son of James Crichton of Frendraught, second Lord Crichton, and his wife Jonet Dunbar. This is one of two propositions reported by Stirnet: Crichton 02 but it is not supported by The Scots Peerage account of Crichton, Lord Crichton, which does mention the laird of Cranston-Riddell. The Scots Peerage III: 61-4 To be fair, Stirnet does recognize the difficulty in identifying the ancestry of Sir David Crichton of Cranston-Riddell, and acknowledges the fact that others have claimed that he was the son of Robert Crichton, first Lord Crichton of Sanquar. Squire in the Household of James III, King of Scots
David Crichton of Cranston-Riddell is noticed as a squire in the Household of James III, King of Scots, on 30 April 1465, RMS, 1524-1513: 831 but he probably entered the king's service before 9 July 1454, when a fee of six pounds, thirteen shillings and four pence was paid to him from the customs of the Royal Burgh of Linlithgow. The Lands and Barony of Cranston-Riddell
James III, King of Scots, gave the lands of Cranston-Riddell to David Crichton, who was one of the squires or gentlemen of his household. The date upon which the king made his grant has not been identified but the lands of Cranston-Riddell were in David Crichton's hands before 25 July 1468, the date upon which he transferred ownership of the demsne land of Cranston-Riddell to his son and heir Patrick Crichton. Death
A date of Death has not been identified for David Crichton of Cranston-Riddell, here treated. He was alive on 28 January 1477-78, RMS, 1424-1513: 1356 but he probably died before 22 April 1485, the date upon which his son and heir Patrick took sasine of the lands of Nisbet as heir to his father. 25 July 1468: Charter by which James III, King of Scots, confirms that he has given certain husbandlands and the cottages of Cranstoune-Redale in the sheriffdom of Edinburgh to his household squire DAVID DE CREICHTOUNE DE CRANSTOUNE-REDALE and MERGARETE SCHAW his spouse.
