A monumental brass in the neighboring parish of Writtle, Essex, shows his date of death as 22 December 1595:

Neere unto this place resteth in peace the body of Edward Elliot, late of Newland, in the county of Essex, Esq.; son of John Elliot of Stortford, in the countrye of Herford. He tooke wyfe Jane one of the daughters of James Gedge, son and heire of Margaret Gedge, one of the daughters and heire of Thomas Barfield of Shenfield; by whom he had yssue 4 sonnes and 6 daughters. They lived together in married estate 33 years and he decesed the 22 day of Decemb. In the ere of our Lorde 1595 [aged] 60.

The will of Edward Eliot, dated 23 December 1595 and proved 15 May 1596, has been published in Genealogical Gleanings in England, by Waters. He left his manor of "Wicombes als Wickemhames" to his eldest son Thomas for the life of his widow Jane, after which it was to pass to second son Edward. His property called Priors he left to his third son John. Daughters Hannah, Jane,and Elizabeth were to receive £300 at marriage or age 21. To "daughter Collen" he left £20 and to "my brother Bogas the like sum of twenty pounds over and above all such sums as my son, her husband, oweth unto me"[sic]. Edward also named his brother Butler, sister Pulisden [sic, Pilston], Mr. Josline, minister at Good Easter, cousin Huckle and his wife, Mr. Kendall of Roxwell, and goddaughter Priscilla Quarles. The will was witnessed by John butler, Richard Glascocke, John Collen, and Stephen Collen.

The Eliots of Newland Hall, in the Parish of Roxwell, Essex (from whomsome have asserted that John Eliot the celebrated Apostle to the Indians sprang), held the manors of Wickham Margareting, and Newland Hall in the county of Essex, together with the rectory of Norton Mandeville. In 1677, Queen Elizabeth let the Manor of Farnham to Edward Eliot, Esq., above named prior to which she granted him a confirmation of free warren. John Eliot, the father of this Edward, resided at Bishop Stortford temp. Hen VIII., where he died and was buried with his brother, George Eliot. Salmon informs us that An old stone in the chancelhad lately this inscription 'Here under this stone lieth buried in the Mercies of God the Bodies of George Eliot and John Elyot Gentlemen being two Brothers which George deceased the 6 of Sept 1551 The said John Oct 20 1557 Whose Death have you in Remembrance calling to God for Mercy.

Edward Eliot of Newland Hall died at Writtle in this county, where he was interred. A monumental brass records the following:-

He married at St. Mary le Bow, London, 3 Feb 1557/8 Jane Gedge. She was the daughter of James Gedge.<ref name=NEHGR162_2008/>

Death

He was buried 29 December 1595 at Roxwell, Essex. The monumental brassat the nearby parish of Writtle shows his death as 22 December 1595.<ref name=NEHGR162_2008/>

NEWLAND NAZING BRANCH OF FAMILY

The children of John Elliott, first son of John Elliott,
were John Elliott, clerk in the navy at London, born 1537; married Elenor. daughter of Sir John Newton . They had one son and heir, Sir Thomas Elliott of Stamford River County, Exeter.

BLYTHE ELLIOTT, second son of John Elliott, married Georgia Haines of Hawes. They had one son, Edward.

EDWARD ELLIOTT, son of Blythe, married Jane, daughter of James Gedge of Sheffield, Essex County; buried in Roxwell Church December 29, 1595, lived at Newland. Had one son and three daughters. Jane, the eldest daughter, married John — Bufjer of Little Burch, Essex, December 27, 1599. Dorothy, second daughter of Edward (find no record of her marriage or death). Elizabeth, third daughter of Edward, baptized March 30, 1600 ; married John Yonge .

EDWARD, only son of Edward Elliott, baptized July 5, 1579, in Roxwell Church. Edward was the father of Bennett, who married Lettyse Agga r of Woodford Hartfordshire, England.

BENNETT ELLIOTT was considered a very wealthy man of that time. They had seven children, four boys and three girls. He was buried at Nazing, Essex County, November 21, 1621.

His will, proved March 28, 1622, reads: “Bury my body in decent and Christian manner. I give and bequeath all the rents and profits of all my copy and customary lands and tene- ments in the several parishes of Ware, Wedford, Hunsdon and East Weeke in the County of Hartford unto my trusty and well beloved friends, Wm. -Curti s. my son-in-law, NJchplas Gamp, the younger, and JohnKey s, all of said parish of Nazing, for the space of eight years from the time of my decease. To pay unto my son, John, quarterly the sum of eight pounds a year of lawful money of England for and towards his maintenance in the University of Cambridge, where he is now a scholar. And the residue of the rents and profits I give and bequeath towards the bringing up of my youngest children, that is
