Notes
The Essex visitations inaccurately states that John's first wife was Elizabeth Grave.
The following inscription on a "brass Plate in a Black Stone" in the south west corner of St. Michael's Church, Bishops Storford, Herfordshire, was recorded in 1700 by Sire Henry Chauncy:
Here under this stone lieth buried in the Mercies of God, the Bodies of George Elyot and John Elyot, gentlemen, being two Brothers which George Deceased the 6th of Sept. an. 1551, the said John Deceased the 20th of October, 1557, Whose Deaths have you in remembrance, calling to God for Mercy.
According to Sir H. Chauncy the stones were not legible in Salmon's time, as he says, "an old stone had lately this inscription." Since John's will was dated 22, October 1557 his death would probably be the 30th.

Biography
John ELLIOTT.
Born in 1516 in Bishops Stratford, Hertfordshire, England. In1546 whenJohn was 30, he married Margaret SHEPPY, in Bishops Stratford, Hertfordshire, England. John Eliot's descendants became wealthy mercers in London and claimed Welsh aristocratic descent. "The name of his first wife is unknown; her burial is noted in the churchwardens' accounts for Bishops Stratfordfor 1521-22 as 16d received of "John Elyat for the wast of the torchis at the buryall of his wyfe". According to the Essex visitations, unforunately reiddled with inaccuracies, John Eliot first married Elizabeth Grave and second Margaret Shepey. The name of his first wife in thevisitations is probably incorrect. In his will John Eliot left 20d to"every child that Richard Grave or his wife hath now living... savingto John Elyott her eldest son, unto whom I give and bequeath twenty shillings." It is porbable that Richard Graves wife was the widow of anunidentified older son of John Eliot., especially as John's will recognizes her family in the mist of bequests to his other children." The will of John Elyott of Bishops Stratford, dated 22 Oct 1557, nameswife Margaret and leaves her "my lease of the tythe and pasonage of Stratford" during her widowhood. To son Rowland he also left the lease of Parson's Mill." To every child of daughters Agnes Pylston, Blythe Hanes, and George he have one ewe and one lamb.
