Sir Edwin Thomas Smith
Sir Edwin Thomas Smith was born at Walsall in Staffordshire on 6 April 1830 and educated at Queen Mary's School there. He emigrated to South Australia aboard the California in 1853 and married on 25 June 1857 Florence Stock who died in 1862. Originally an importer, in 1860 he entered into partnership with Edward Logue of the Old Kent Brewery, carrying on the business after Logue's death in 1862. He married secondly Elizabeth Spicer of Adelaide on 11 November 1869. In 1875 he shifted his business to the elaborate Kent Town Brewery.
Edwin Smith was Mayor of Kensington and Norwood from 1867 to 1870 and again from 1871 to 1873. As Mayor of Adelaide from 1879 to 1881 and 1886 to 1887 he initiated numerous public works including gas lighting. He was made a KCMG in 1888 following the successful Jubilee International Exhibition and retired from business the same year. Sir Edwin Smith represented East Torrens in the House of Assembly from 1871 to 1893, serving as Minister of Education in 1884. He was a member of the Legislative Council for the Southern Districts from 1894 to 1902.
In retirement Sir Edwin Smith made several trips home where he made generous donations to the school, hospital and other institutions of his native Walsall of which he was a freeman. He died at his home the 'Acacias', now Loreto Convent, Marryatville, on 25 December 1919 leaving numerous charitable bequests. He was buried at Clayton Congregational Church.
