• SIR FRANCIS BAILDON, knight, 2.B., of Walton Head in the parish of Kirkby Overblow, Snaith, Kippax, Methley, and Blithborough (Suffolk), was possibly the eldest son of George of Methley, I.A. [ante, p. 1]. There is nothing to show whether he or his brother Hilary was the elder ; and their parentage is nowhere stated, though there is no reasonable doubt about it. .... etc.

• SIR FRANCIS BAILDON was four times married. His first wife was Frances, daughter of Henry Johnson by his wife Elizabeth, daughter of Richard Norton of Norton. The first child mentioned in the Kippax Register is Ellen, so we may assume that Francis was born before his father settled there. Francis was possibly born at Waltonhead, where, as we have seen, Sir Francis was living in 1583-4. In the Kippax Register is the following "Frauncis Baldon buried 21 May, 1587." This I take to be Frances Baildon, the first wife of Sir Francis. The spellings Frances and Francis were frequently confounded, in parish registers especially. In that case by his first wife Sir Francis Baildon had one son and three daughters.

  • 2. Dorothy, or "Doritye," baptised at Kippax, 10 April, 1586 ; buried there 9 August following.
  • 3. Elizabeth, baptised 21 May, 1587. An Elizabeth Baildon was buried at Kippax 9 February, 1666, but I think the entry cannot refer to this Elizabeth, because it seems unlikely that if she had been living and unmarried at date of her father's will, she should not be mentioned in it.
• Frances, wife of Sir Francis Baildon was, as I have already stated, buried at Kippax, 21 May, 1587. She appears to have died in child-birth as Elizabeth, her youngest child, was baptised on the same day as her mother was buried.
• Sir Francis next married Margaret, daughter of Richard Goodrick of Ribstone, by his wife Clare, daughter of Richard Norton of Norton. His first two wives thus appear to have been first cousins as this small pedigree will more clearly show.

• Sir Francis appears to have married Margaret Goodrick some time in 1588, as she had a child in 1589. By his second wife, Sir Francis had six sons and two daughters.

  • 4. Clare was a daughter of Margaret, but she was not baptised at Kippax. She may have been born between William and Richard in 1589 or 90 ; or between Cuthbert and Martin in 1593 ; or between Thomas and Muriel in 1597. She married Laurence Kighley or Knightley ; it is spelt both ways in Sir Francis's will ; and by him had one child born prior to November 5, 1615.
  • 5. Muriel, or "Mereall," baptised 30 September, 1598 ; married Edward Chadderton of York, by whom she had a son Francis, born 1623. In Dugdale's "Visitation," in the pedigree of Chadderton, she is described as "Muriell, eldest daughter of Sir Francis Baildon of Baildon in com. Ebor. knt." Of course, this is a mistake, for there was no Francis Baildon of Baildon at that time. As Muriel is here called eldest daughter, we may assume that Ellen and Elizabeth her sisters both died young.

• Sir Francis married for the third time Isabel, daughter of Sir Philip Tyrwhit, and widow of Robert Haldenby of Haldenby. She was the mother of Elizabeth Haldenby, wife of Francis, eldest son of Sir Francis.

• Isabel does not appear to have had any children. She was buried at Kippax, 9 March, 1601.
• Sir Francis married for the fourth time, Anne Colebie or Colby, widow (between Hil. 1604-5 and Hil. 1605-6).
• The entry in the Kippax register of the marriage of Sir Francis's eldest son is "Francis Baldon and Elizabeth Haldenbe, married 15 May, 1595." He had issue two sons and one daughter :

Biography

Baildon came from an obscure branch of a Yorkshire gentry family. His first wife brought him a small property in Kirkby Overblow, in the West Riding, which had been saved by a family settlement when her father was attainted for his part in the Northern rebellion of 1570. He also owned land in the Crown manor of Kippax, in the same Riding, which he improved by mining coal. His annual income was only £150, but his fourth marriage in 1604 brought him a Suffolk estate of £500 p.a. By 1607 he was living at Blythburgh in east Suffolk, by which date or shortly after, he was appointed to the Suffolk bench. He had moved to Huntingfield, about eight miles away, by 1611 when he was assessed at £10 for the Privy Seal loan.[9]

Baildon almost certainly owed his election at Orford in 1614 to his friend Sir Michael Stanhope*, the dominant electoral patron in the borough. Stanhope nominated Baildon to help arbitrate in a land dispute, and, when in London, Baildon usually lodged in Stanhope’s town house in Clerkenwell.[10] Baildon left no trace on the records of the Addled Parliament and was the only member of his family to sit in the Commons.

Baildon probably moved back to the West Riding soon after the dissolution as he was added to the local bench in April 1615 and described himself as of Methley, a parish seven miles south of Leeds, when he drew up his will that November. However, he was still being described as of Huntingfield as late as 1617, when he was outlawed for debt. His outlawry almost certainly related to his role as surety for his third wife’s brother, Sir Edward Tyrwhitt*, as it was subsequently stated that he was too afraid to ‘walk abroad ... for fear to be arrested’ by Tyrwhitt’s creditors. He died at Monk Fryston in the West Riding on 24 June 1622, leaving as his heir his grandson by his first marriage, who alienated the Kippax property to Sir William Slingsby*. The children of his second marriage were puritans; one (indicted for highway robbery in his youth) emigrated to Connecticut in 1635, and two others became officers in the parliamentary army in 1642.[11]

• ....Tyrwhitt’s mounting financial difficulties caused the outlawry for debt of his brother-in-law, Sir Francis Baildon*, who had stood as his surety.21 In 1627 Tyrwhitt was obliged to petition the king for a year’s protection from his creditors. However, before it expired, he died intestate on 4 Mar. 1628.22 His grandson, Sir Philip Tyrwhitt, 4th bt.†, represented Great Grimsby in 1667.

Sir Francis Baildon, son of George, was born in 1560. He was reeve of Kippax, 1588, and was knighted at the coronation of James I. He was married four times. By his first wife Frances, daughter of Henry Johnson of Leathly, who was buried at Kippax May 21, 1587, he had a son Francis and three daughters. By his second wife, Margaret, daughter of Richard Goodrick, of Ripston, who was buried September 22, 1589, he had William, baptized January 4, 1589, who died before his father; Richard, mentioned below, and six younger children [Cuthbert, Martin, Henry, Thomas, Muriell, and Clare born between 1592 and 1597]. By his third wife Isabel, daughter of Sir Philip Tyrwhit, who was buried March 9, 1610, and by his fourth wife, Anna Coleby, who survived him, he had no children. Sir Francis died in 1623.
