KNIGHT-JUDGE DIES AGED 93

SYDNEY, Tuesday: Sir George Rich, who died yesterday, aged 93, was a Justice of the High Court for 37 years - a record term. He held the position from 1913 to 1950, and was acting Chief Justice in 1940-41.

Born at Braidwood, N.S.W., in 1863, he graduated as B.A. in 1883 and M.A. in 1885 from Sydney University. Two years later he was called to the Bar, and became a judge of the Court of N.S.W, in 1911. Soon after- his elevation to the High Court, Sir George was appointed Royal Commissioner of the Liverpool military camp inquiry, to investigate and report oh complaints made, by soldiers regarding their conditions. He disregarded convention by going to Liverpool to gain first-hand information, and often beat the official rereveille with his early self appointed parades. In 1922 Sir George represented the Commonwealth of Australia as_ delegate to the League of Nations. He is survived. by his widow, a son, and a daughter.

P.M.'s tribute CANBERRA, Tuesday: Mr. Menzies. Prime Minister, to night paid a tribute to the late Sir George Rich. , As a barrister Mr. Menzies frequently appeared before Sir George in the High Court. "We * will greatly, miss him," said Mr. Menzies. "He brought to the work of the Bench a considerable capacity for listening and not speaking. But his judgments revealed an educated, and lively mind.

"In conveying my sympathy to his family I would like to say how deeply indebted to him I was, and how sad I am that I will not see him again."
