About Sir Grey Skipwith, 3rd Baronet of Prestwold

Graye/Grey Skipwith emigrated from England to Virginia with his older sister Diana between 1650 and 1655. Grey inherited the Baronetcy, becoming Sir Grey Skipwith, 3rd Baronet of Prestwold, Leicestershire, after the death of his older brother in 1656. After emigrating to America Grey married Anne, daughter of Sir Edmund Kempe, a Royalist who is said to have emigrated from somewhere in the County of Norfolk, England.

Documentary evidence about Sir Grey is scant. Different Internet genealogy sites claim he had from one to three wives. Documentary evidence does show that Grey had married Anne, the widow of Edmund Kempe, by 1661 as, on 10 July of that year, as Dame Anne Skipwith, she acted as administrator of her dead husband's estate.

Sir Grey and Anne (Kempe) had one child, William. As Dame Anne Skipwith, his mother continued to protect his interests while he was still a child. William became Sir William Skipwith, 4th Baronet, after the death of his father. There is no evidence that, as some claim, they had a daughter Cassandra.

The Minutes of the Colonial and General Council of Colonial Virginia indicate that Sir Grey had died by 23 May 1671. He left no will and had not appointed an administrator. It seems, then, that his death was unexpected. Dame Anne Skipwith died 5 March 1685/6.

  • The Skipwith Baronetcy, of Prestwould in the County of Leicester, was created in the Baronetage of England on 20 December 1622 for the son of Sir William Henry Skipwith, the poet Henry Skipwith (b. 21 Mar 1589, Prestwould Manor, Coates, Leicestershire). The third Baronet, Sir Grey, emigrated to Virginia in the middle of the 17th century. The next five Baronets were all born in Virginia. During the American Revolution, the seventh Baronet, Sir Peyton, continued to use his title throughout the war. His son, Grey, who was left an estate by Sir Thomas George Skipwith, 4th Baronet, moved to England by 1801. In 1805 after his father died, Grey became the eighth Baronet and sat as Member of Parliament for Warwickshire and Warwickshire South.[1]

Sir Grey Skipwith, 8th Baronet of Prestwould, was sent to England at age 13.  He was a descendant of Col. Robert and Anne (Stith) Bolling, whose progeny are sometimes erroneously thought to be descendants of the famous Native American princess Pocahontas.  Col. Robert Bolling’s first wife was Jane Rolfe, granddaughter of Pocahontas, hence the confusion.  However, members of the Skipwith family did marry into the bloodline of Pocahontas.
